Talk:Sawnik (3.5e Vestige)
Favor the Flavor[edit]
I understand this is your first vestige. Those are fun things, jam packed with flavor. I see what you're doing here and I'd like to offer some aid. Just as a general bit of advice, vestiges are a good time to go rich in flavor text. This is Sonic clearly, but I encourage you to adapt the Sonic mythos to sound D&Dish not only because it fits into any setting better for would-be users of the vestige, but also because it's fun to do so. Maybe something to the effect of a legend of a peaceful land invaded by an evil artificer and his machine army. Through magic was formed Sonic who fought them, yada yada... then the important part missing from here: How he became a vestige. Here's a good one, "During his final conflict with the evil artificer, he forced himself to speed beyond all limits. The act destroyed the artificer's evil base, but Sonic vanished having gone too fast." Typically vestiges give a story about how Person A or Concept B no longer exists because of reasons, and therefore now it's a binder's spoopy ghost power.
That's a pretty high binding DC. I have no particular comment on it as it mostly is just a measure of inconvenience, but why is it that high?
I encourage flavor in the naming of the titles for the powers you gain. Gotta Move Fast is right, though Free the Creatures is weird. I get it, but are there ANY examples of a creature powered construct in D&D? Remember, these are adaptations instead of direct rips so it's cool and encouraged to alter things to make sense. That said, that damage calculation is still pretty warped. Why not say "you have Bane vs Constructs" or "you get an additional XdX damage vs Constructs" instead of whatever that is?
Fast Attack and Jump Attack, surely we can get better titles for those. Leap Attack should either be linked or (such in this case) have a superscriptsuperscript telling where it comes from. In this case it's Leap AttackCAdv for Complete Adventurer. Otherwise people will have no idea what you're talking about. Small problem is: Leap Attack uses Power Attack. What happens if you don't have power attack?
Oh, and Jump can always be used untrained.
Pounce is powerful, and should be linked, but it's straight forward and probably ok at 5th level. However, if I were to replace the last two powers I recommend the following:
Dash Attack: As long as you move in a straight line, you can make a single attack against every creature in the row. It's basically Whirlwind Attack in a straight line. Maybe you don't provoke from those you attack. Make it a full attack action or something and up to your movement speed.
Spines: You gain a feral strike (spines) with whatever damage. I'm suggesting this variant rule over normal natural attacks for BAB reasons. It gives you a weapon you always have while your sign is exposed (and add it to the sign), and you can give it whatever properties. Probably construct bane properties. In fast you may be able to ditch Free the Creatures, add the construct bane stuff here, and add a new power. Maybe something concerning Sonic's ability to not die in one hit. Give them the effect of a Sturdy Ring and this will be "you lost all your rings and now you might die" effect. The sturdy ring effect comes back into play once you rebind Sonic.
Also an addition for Gotta Move Fast: Your overland speed multiplies by x100. Because you may be 60ft a round The Human but that's still too slow. Gotta go fast, and it's just a nice non-combat power to have.
All in all that would give you:
- Dash Attack: Whirlwind attack in a line.
- Gotta Go Fast: Speed boosts.
- Ring Shield: Sturdy Ring effect.
- Spines: Feral Strike Weapon + Construct Bane.
