Vaegrim's Guides to Balanced Content[edit]

Like many amateur developers, I have "strong feelings" about balanced design. The central premise in any balance argument I raise will be one of comparable alternatives. Whenever we add new content we should strive to create interesting play space without obsoleting or invalidating current game components. If you create a new feat, the goal should be to encourage new character builds using it rather than altering old builds into replacing one of their current choices. Likewise a new spell may have circumstances where its use eclipse current spells, but it shouldn't outperform existing spells in their niche. This sort of comparison can get complicated when designing races or class Archetypes; to which end I have essays on exactly those subjects to help those who feel adrift.
