The longspear is a longer version of the spear. Longspears are made to be flexible, allowing them to be a finesse weapon, but cannot be thrown (except as an improvised weapon.
Their length classifies them as a polearm for the Polearm Master feat (see Publication:Player's Handbook (5e) p.168).
