The creation of a mad swordsmith, the Crimson Yōtō are extremely well-made katanas, with a silvery blade with a black sheen to them. The handle of the blade is typically wrapped in red leather or fabric. Only four of such swords were made, and all were imbued with dark power. These +1 Adamantine Katana have the unique ability to absorb the blood of the fallen. When a Crimson Yōtō is successfully used to strike a creature with blood, the attack deals an extra 1d6 points of damage.

As a full-round action that provokes an attack of opportunity, the wielder can command the Crimson Yōtō to absorb all spilled blood within 60 feet. The process removes all blood, dry and fresh, from all surfaces within the area. The body of slain creatures are also completely drained of any remaining blood.

The more blood a Crimson Yōtō absorbed, the stronger it can become. Once the blade has absorbed enough blood, the user can perform a ritual which lasts 8 hours and the sacrifice of material components to permanently improve the blade. The amount of blood needed and cost of the ritual are listed on the table below. The amount of blood the sword has absorbed is not reduced by performing the ritual, and multiple rituals can be performed consecutively if the Crimson Yōtō absorbed a sufficient amount of blood.

Only the fresh blood of intelligent creatures is counted for the purpose of upgrading the blade. For the sake of comparison, a typical human has about 5.5 liters of blood in their body, a cow about 39 liters and an elephant 450 liters. Ultimately how much blood is absorbed is up to the GM's discretion.

Table: Blood Absorbed Bonus
Bonus Blood Required Ritual Cost
+1 Keen 55 liters 3,000 GP
+2 Keen 550 liters 5,000 GP
+2 Keen Unholy 1,650 liters 16,000 GP
+4 Keen Unholy 5,500 liters 24,000 GP
+5 Keen Wounding Unholy 24,000 liters 51,000 GP

Upon reaching it final state, a Crimson Yōtō can be turned into a +5 Vorpal Adamantine Katana, or back to its original form, as a swift action. The transformation lasts until the wielder undo it, or the Crimson Yōtō leaves her hands.

The Crimson Yōtō is a unique item that cannot be replicated, but is not an artifact. Unlike many unique weapons it cannot be enhanced normally.
