Originally created for my Pacifist class, I decided to place this in its own article so others can reference and use it more easily if they wish. Why? Because I'm nice and it's a nice alternative to negative levels.

Daunt Level

An opponent who has been affected by one or more Daunt Levels takes a cumulative –1 penalty on all skill checks, ability checks, attack rolls, saving throws, is treated as being one level lower for the purposes of ability calculations (including spells), and loses any immunity they have to nonlethal damage. For each hour that passes without combat, the opponent loses one Daunt Level. An opponent whose Daunt Levels equal his current hit dice becomes staggered. When staggered by Daunt Levels, the condition does not go away until they have all been removed. Opponents who have been Daunted in this manner are likely to retreat or surrender, having lost all will to keep fighting.

For Daunt Levels to impose a penalty or the staggered condition, the subject must be capable of using Language-Dependent skills. Though this requirement may seem strange, it prevents animals, savage beasts, berserkers, or those of severe mental impairment from being daunted as they do not properly understand the concept of a hopeless fight. It also allows intelligent undead and awakened constructs to be Daunted. There is no limit to how many daunt levels someone can suffer, but the penalty does not exceed their hitdice.

Any spell effect that removes Wisdom damage/drain, morale penalties, or exhaustion removes a number of Daunt levels equal to the spell level. Defeating the one who imposed the daunt levels in the first place removes any they have placed. The one who inflicted daunt levels may remove a number of them up to his charisma modifier (minimum 1) as a full round action through consoling or similar sympathetic acts that the daunted one can understand.

Creatures with "—" (a non-ability) on any mental score cannot suffer from Daunt levels.
