Originally fashioned by royal blacksmiths at the behest of their kings to imitate the look of pleated tunics that the aristocracy of the time found fashionable, the fluted armor could be considered a flight of fancy that stuck, because as it turned out fluted armor is really, really good at averting heavy blows. The grooves in parallel fluting is sublimely resistant against both blades and blunt force, though ranged and piercing attacks have the unfortunate habit of getting caught in the fluting.
Fluted plate is functionally identical to full plate armor, with the following additions.
- Being heavily resistant to sundering, the fluted plate's hit points (both mundane and as a result of additional magical enhancement) are half again as much as that of an ordinary full plate.
- Fluted plate confers DR/piercing to its wearer, equal to one-third the hardness of the metal it is made out of. The AC bonus of this armor counts as 2 less when targeted by piercing weapons. Increased hardness from magical enhancement will also increase this damage reduction.
- Magical fluted plate has affinity for fortification. It automatically gains fortification equivalent to its raw magical enhancement bonus; Light fortification at +1, Medium fortification at +3, and Heavy fortification at +5.
