Simple Wizard

Get the vibes of being a wizard with a few powerful spells and then some standbys, without being overwhelmed with 20 spell slots at level 10.

Class: Wizard, or other prepared full caster with similar spells per day progression.

Level: 1

Replaces: Spellcasting

Benefit: Your spells prepared use the following chart:

Backup Spells Main Spells
4 4

You get bonus spells based on a high ability modifier, reduced by your highest spell level as follows:

Table: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells
Modifier Minus Spell Level Bonus Spells
Backup Spells Main Spells
+1 or less
+2 to +3 1
+4 to +5 1 1
+6 to +7 2 1
+8 to +9 2 2
+10 to +11 3 2
+12 to +13 3 3
+14 to +15 4 3
+16 to +17 4 4
etc. . .

Main Spells: Main spells are regular spell slots, prepared and expended the normal way, with a spell level up to the highest level the class could normally cast (class level divided by 2, rounded up).

Backup Spells: Backup spells are prepared like normal, but are not expended when cast and can be used at-will. If you have the ability to fill an empty slot with 15 minutes of preparation (or similar), then you can swap out a filled backup slot in that time.

You are limited in the number of backup spells active at once to the number of backup spells you have. If you cast a backup spell with a duration other than instantaneous, and you already had the maximum number of backup spells with durations active at once, you choose one backup spell to end immediately.

Backup spells have a maximum spell level of two levels lower than the class could normally cast, or 0, whichever is higher (class level divided by 2, rounded up, minus 2).
