Feature Trading
This variant allows one to trade features in one class for those in another. When ranking in a class, a player can choose to replace features earned at a particular level, with equal or lesser features from a different class.
When leveling up the player can replace all normally earned features of their current class (including spells) with features of one different class of level equal to or less than their character level. Any new features with progression, are treated as starting at initial level.
For example: A 5th level ranger could replace 2nd favored enemy with wildshape 1/day or sneak attack +1d6 (not +3d6).
Any features from original class, which the player already had obtained at previous levels (excluding spellcasting or manifesting), continue to rank as normal.
For example: a Rogue would continue to advance in Sneak Attack and a Monk would advance in Flurry of Blows.
BAB, Saves and HD: A player uses the bonuses to BAB, Saves and HD from their original class.
Spellcasting/Manifesting: If the original class is a spellcaster (or manifester), they skip gaining new spell slots or spells known. However, when the player advances in their original class, they are otherwise treated as having earned the level (i.e., challenge DC, and spell effects).
For example: A 6th level Sorcerer who uses this rule, would permanently skip learning a 3rd level spell (at 6th level), and would have the spell allotment of a 5th level sorcerer (but treated like a 6th level for spells like flaming sphere). However, if they choose to rank in Sorcerer at 7th level, they would gain one 3rd level spell and be treated as a 7th level sorcerer for all other purposes (just one less 3rd level spell known).
If the temporary class has a spell list, the player gains knowledge of four spells of the maximum level that that class can cast at that level (or two at max and four one level lower). They may cast these spells four times per day. And are treated as being one half the new class level for spell effects and DC.
Bonus Feat: Alternatively, a player can choose to earn a bonus feat (instead of gaining a class feature). Contrariwise, whenever a player has an opportunity to gain a feat (every three levels), they made trade it for one feature from an alternate class.
Prestige Classes: A player can use this alternate rule to gain features from a prestige class. However, they must still meet the requirements of the prestige class.
If the prestige class has “+1 level of existing spellcasting class” or “ Feature Advancement” this may be applied to original class only.
Fighters and Dead Levels: A player must have a feature or feat to trade to use this variant rule. They may not just fill empty levels with new features.
