When casting this spell, black chains of solidified shadowstuff wrap around the creature you touch, seemingly sinking themselves deeply within its flesh. The chains are burdensome and inflict the effect of the burden spell upon the target, but otherwise don't directly impede its mobility. However, while the black chains of durance imprison their target, it will be unable to leave the area, becoming magically tethered to the place where the spell was cast on him. At the end of each of the creature's turns, it is automatically teleported back to the place of casting. If the creature attempts to move more than 30 feet from the place of casting, it is also teleported back even if its turn is still ongoing. The chains act as a dimensional anchor that bars any sort of dimensional or planar travel apart from itself.

The chains can be dispelled, but at +10 to the dispel DC. The chains' individual durability is irrelevant, any broken ones immediately being replaced with others. To destroy the chains enough to break the spell, more than 10 times your caster level in damage must be dealt to the chains in the space of one round. The chains have an effective Armor Class of 15 + your caster level, and reduce all incoming damage from any source by your caster level.

A trapped creature can break out of the chains with a successful Strength check, or a grapple or Escape Artist check. The chains' break DC is 25 + half your caster level (rounded down) and they counter-grapple at a modifier equal to your caster level +12. Either way, all of these methods of escape cause the otherwise harmless chain spikes to drive themselves into the target's flesh, dealing 1d6 points of magical piercing damage per caster level. The chains counter freedom of movement; a creature with this effect active merely gets a +8 circumstance bonus to any check meant to free himself from the chains.

Freedom counters and removes the chains, as does a successful break enchantment or a limited wish.
