Deathblows
DND as written can use some cool things that martials can do instead of attacking X number of times a turn. This is one of my ideas for something that can make martial characters more dynamic to play while having more options for their attacks
The Variant Rule
When you hit with a melee weapon attack against a creature, you can declare that you are making it a Deathblow, by expending an extra attack that you are able to make from the Extra Attack Feature, Haste, or similar effect. It automatically does the maximum damage possible. If this damage however does not kill the creature, the damage is halved, and the attacker gains the following effects until the end of their next turn.
If a creature survives a deathblow, they cannot be targeted by one again from the same creature.
Consequences of Failure
- The creature cannot take reactions.
- The creature can take either an action or a bonus action.
- They cannot make more then one weapon attack during their turn.
- If they attempt to cast a spell, they must make a concentration check as concentrating on a spell, and on a failure, the spell is expended with no effect and the slot is wasted.
