Planar Blade

The Planar Blade is a martial master of many planes, with fire and ice coursing through his veins.

Making a Planar Blade

Planar Blades run about, do damage to things, and are immune to things. Other activities are for other people, or utility items.

Abilities: Planar Blades only really use Strength, Constitution, and Dexterity. Feel free to be incredibly stupid.

Races: People who are naturally attuned to planes may find it easier to grasp the basic concepts of Planar Bladesmanship. This has no in-game effect.

Alignment: Any. Some Planar Blades are Chaotic Good with the [Good], [Evil], [Lawful], and [Chaotic] subtypes.

Starting Gold: 5d4×10 gp (125 gp).

Starting Age: Complex unless your Intelligence is 10 or more, in which case Simple. It's not that being a Planar Blade is all that complicated; it's just that many people who have aptitude for it are so stupid that it takes a long time to teach them.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Planar Blade.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Planar Blades are proficient with light, medium, and heavy armor, shields (except tower shields), and simple and martial weapons.

Illiteracy: Planar Blades do not automatically know how to read and write. A planar blade may spend 2 skill points to gain the ability to read and write all languages she is able to speak.

A planar blade who gains a level in any other class automatically gains literacy. Any other character who gains a planar blade level does not lose the literacy he or she already had.

Attunements (Su): Here is the meat of the Planar Blade. At every odd-numbered level, the Planar Blade gains access to a new Attunement, and at every even-numbered level, the Planar Blade gains the next ability in each Attunement she already possesses. At later levels, the Planar Blade gains Attunements that start at an ability other than Basic; in this case, she also gets all abilities that come before the listed ability.

Fire Attunement: The planar blade's attunement with the plane of Fire, the Abyss, or the Hells has given her power over fire. She gains the [Fire] subtype.

  • Basic (Su): Once per round, as a free action, the planar blade may deal 2 fire damage per character level to a creature within Close range.
  • Minor (Ex): The planar blade becomes immune to fire damage.
  • Good (Sp): As a standard action, the planar blade may breathe fire in a Medium cone. This deals 1d6 fire damage per character level, with a Reflex save (DC 10 + half character level + Strength or Dexterity modifier) for half damage.
  • Major (Ex): The planar blade is healed by fire damage.
  • Great (Ex): Whenever the planar blade deals damage, she also deals that much fire damage.
  • Terrific (Sp): Whenever there is fire in a space and the planar blade is aware of it, she may teleport to that space as an immediate action. If she is acting on false information, the action is wasted.

Cold Attunement: The planar blade's attunement with the plane of Air, Water, the Hells, or Ysgard has given her power over cold. She gains the [Cold] subtype.

  • Basic (Su): Once per round, as a free action, the planar blade may deal 2 cold damage per character level to each creature adjacent to her or in her space.
  • Minor (Ex): The planar blade becomes immune to cold damage.
  • Good (Sp): The planar blade may use a standard action to make a ranged touch attack against a creature within Medium range. If it hits, the target must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + half character level + Strength or Dexterity modifier) or be paralyzed for 1 round per character level.
  • Major (Ex): The planar blade is healed by cold damage.
  • Great (Sp): As a standard action, the planar blade may create one 10' cube of ice per character level in any empty spaces within Medium range. These cubes of ice do not move (much like an immovable rod), have 50 hit points, 5 hardness, and fire vulnerability. If left alone, they melt after 1 minute.
  • Terrific (Su): You slow down the rest of the universe somewhat. This means that you may take an extra turn every round, at your normal initiative count -10.

Electricity Attunement: The planar blade's attunement with the plane of Air or Acheron has given her power over electricity.

  • Basic (Ex): The planar blade gets a +30' bonus to any movement speed of 15' or more that she possesses.
  • Minor (Ex): The planar blade becomes immune to electricity damage.
  • Good (Sp): The planar blade may use a standard action to deal 1d6 points of electricity damage per character level to everything in a Long line. Creatures may make a Reflex save (DC 10 + half character level + Strength or Dexterity modifier) for half damage.
  • Major (Ex): The planar blade is healed by electricity damage.
  • Great (Sp): As a move action, the planar blade can teleport a distance equal to her speed. As a full-round action, she can teleport a distance equal to her run speed, or teleport a distance equal to twice her speed and then make an attack.
  • Terrific: When the planar blade uses the Great benefit of her Electricity Attunement, she may swap places with a creature, provided that she can fit where the creature was, and the creature can fit where she was.

Acid Attunement: The planar blade's attunement with the plane of Water has given her power over acid.

  • Basic (Ex): Whenever the planar blade hits an opponent with an unarmed or natural attack, that opponent begins taking 1 point of acid damage per character level per round. Multiple instances of this acid damage do not stack. A creature afflicted with this acid damage may spend a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity to remove the acid.
  • Minor (Ex): The planar blade becomes immune to acid damage.
  • Good (Ex): The planar blade adds twice her character level as a bonus to Disable Device, Open Lock, and Excape Artist checks.
  • Major (Ex): The planar blade is healed by acid damage.
  • Great (Sp): As a standard action, the planar blade can splatter every target in a 40' radius spread up to Long range away with acid. This functions like acid from the Basic effect of Acid Attunement.
  • Terrific (Ex): Whenever a weapon strikes you, the weapon takes 5 points of acid damage per character level. Whenever you strike an item, the item takes 5 points of acid damage per character level. You may choose to activate or deactivate this ability as a standard action.

Sonic Attunement: The planar blade's attunement with the plane of Air, Pandemonium, or Mechanus has given her power over sound.

  • Basic (Su): When the planar blade speaks, she may have the sound of her voice emanate from any point she specifies.
  • Minor (Sp): As a standard action, the planar blade can deal 1d6 points of sonic damage per character level to each creature within Close range. Creatures may make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + half character level + Strength or Dexterity modifier) for half damage.
  • Good (Ex): The planar blade becomes immune to sonic damage.
  • Major (Ex): The planar blade adds twice her character level as a bonus to Move Silently, Perform, Intimidate, and Diplomacy checks.
  • Great (Ex): The planar blade is healed by sonic damage.
  • Terrific (Ex): Whenever you strike an opponent with an unarmed, natural, or weapon attack, all other creatures within Close range of that opponent take 2 points of sonic damage per character level.

Negative Attunement: The planar blade's attunement with the plane of Negative Energy has given her power over negative energy. Funny thing, that.

  • Basic (Su): The planar blade may Rebuke Undead as a cleric of her character level. For extra turning attempts, she uses her Strength or Dexterity modifier instead of her Charisma modifier.
  • Minor (Ex): The planar blade becomes immune to negative energy damage.
  • Good (Sp): The planar blade may use animate dead at will, with no material component. If she kills a living opponent, she may immediately animate them as a zombie, as a free action.
  • Major (Ex): The planar blade is healed by negative energy damage.
  • Great (Sp): As a standard action, the planar blade may breathe a Medium cone of negative energy. This deals 1d6 negative levels to any creature that does not succeed on a Fortitude save (DC 10 + half character level + Strength or Dexterity modifier).
  • Terrific (Ex): The planar blade becomes immune to sleep effects, poison, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability drain, and energy drain. The planar blade no longer needs to breathe, eat, or sleep.

Ex-Planar Blades

If a plane to which the planar blade is attuned is destroyed, she may replace any Attunements from that plane with different Attunements.
