Making a Ascendant Spectere

Ascendant spectres are those who like to control morals, or like to change the fates. Wisdom is of supreme importance for her abilities, Charisma has secondary importance, and Dexterity can help with agility and Armor Class - for when you lose your mind!

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: An ascendant is proficient with all simple weapons, and light armor but not with shields. An ascendant can cast ascendant spells while wearing light armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. However, like any other arcane spellcaster, an ascendant wearing medium or heavy armor or using a shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component (most do). A multiclass ascendant still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes.

Spells: At 1st level, an ascendant uses her understanding of elements to cast the following spells. An ascendant casts arcane spells which are drawn primarily from the below list. An ascendant must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time (see below).

To learn or cast a spell, an ascendant must have a Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against an ascendant’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the ascendant’s Intelligence modifier.

Like other spellcasters, an ascendant can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Her base daily spell allotment is given on Table: The Ascendant. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high Wisdom score. When Spells per Day indicates that the ascendant gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level, she gains only the bonus spells she would be entitled to based on her Intelligence score for that spell level.

Unlike a bard or sorcerer, an ascendant may know any number of spells. She must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time by getting a good night’s sleep and spending 1 hour studying her spellbook. While studying, the ascendant decides which spells to prepare from the following list:

Elemental Companion (Su): At 1st level, an ascendant gains a small-sized elemental of her chosen type (i.e., air, earth, fire, water). This elemental is a loyal companion that accompanies the ascendant on her adventures as appropriate for its kind. She can change the type with 8 hours of study (this can also be used to create another if her original died). The elemental gains the same abilities as a Druid's Animal Companion at appropriate levels.

At 4th and every three after, the elemental type increases by one (i.e., elder at 16th).

Energy Resistance (Ex): At 1st level, an ascendant selects one energy type (cold, electricity, fire, or sonic). She has energy resistance equal to class level in this type (i.e., if fire, resist 4 fire at 4th level). This is a permanent resistance, she need not do anything to activate. The selected type cannot be changed.

At 9th level, she selects one more type, which resists half class level (i.e., 4 at 9th). At 17th, she selects a third, which also resists half class level.

Change Energy Damage (Ps): At 3rd level, an ascendant can change energy damage (treat like change energy damage, unaugmented).

At 5th level and every two after, can convert 5 more damage.

Elemental Shape (Su): At 5th level, an ascendant gains the ability to turn herself into any Small or Medium elemental and back again once per day. Her options for new forms include all creatures with the elemental type. The new form’s Hit Dice can’t exceed the character’s ascendant level. This ability functions like the alternate form special ability polymorph spell, except as noted here. The effect lasts for 1 hour per ascendant level, or until she changes back. Changing form (to animal or back) is a standard action and doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. Each time you use elemental shape, you regain lost hit points as if you had rested for a night.

Any gear worn or carried by the ascendant melds into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. When the ascendant reverts to her true form, any objects previously melded into the new form reappear in the same location on her body that they previously occupied and are once again functional. Any new items worn in the assumed form fall off and land at the ascendant's feet.

An ascendant can still speak and cast spells in this form.

An ascendant can use this ability more times per day at 6th, 7th, 10th, 14th, and 18th level, as noted on Table: The Ascendant. In addition, she gains the ability to take the shape of a Large animal at 8th level, a Tiny animal at 11th level, and a Huge animal at 15th level.

Campaign Information

Playing a Ascendant

Ascendant are great for when you’re in town, and can usually give you a better relation with people. But they are also very powerful in the field of battle, controlling the body or mind of their enemies.

Combat: Most ascendant leave their bodies in the back (for protection), and control the strongest creature on the opposing side.

Advancement: The options for advancing this class are limitless, adding a physic class works well; an ascendant who multiclass in a cajoling or charm focused class, losses no experience to multiclassing.

Resources: Most ascendant try to stay away from each other. Once there were a few Ascendant groups that had found The Secret. A few books have survived from that ancient time. Should a Ascendant ever gain possession of one... well let’s just say it would not be good.

Ascendant in the World

I know what you're thinking, I know how to twist you and turn you; but what I do not know is, why you fight back.
—Webster, Ortal Elemental Ascendant

NPC Reactions: Many fear the manipulative powers of ascendant... or at least until they meet one. Becoming cooed into how benign and victimized ascendant really are.

Ascendant Lore

Characters with ranks in Knowledge(The planes) can research ascendant to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.
