Argent Battle Mage[edit]

The power that surges forth from my hand is the purest of energies, you however are not!
—Dewidh, Human Sorcerer/Argent Battle Mage, -Moments before dispatching a lich.

An Argent battle mage has practiced and studied the arcane arts until they have discovered the raw forces of magic. They wield these forces as mercenaries, or as high ranking officers in the wars of mortals. Some even become adventurers seeking personal fortune and fame.

Becoming a Argent Battle Mage[edit]

Magic users pursue the path of the Argent Battle Mage to grasp the raw power of the arcane. This path requires tremendous talent and experience in magical combat, as well as years of study. Upon unlocking the subtleties of the Argent Battle Mage however, one is able to obliterate entire armies.

Entry Requirements

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Argent Battle Mage.

Spells per Day/Spells Known: At each odd level, an Argent Battle Mage gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if she had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class to which she belonged before adding the prestige class level. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (such as the bonus feat sometimes gained by a wizard). If she had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming an Argent Battle Mage, she must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day and spells known.

Bonus Spells: An Argent Battle Mage is able to cast one additional spell with the force descriptor per day at each spell level. This feature functions in conjunction with any bonus spells granted by her spellcasting Ability Modifiers.

Bonus Feat: At 3rd, 6th, and 9th level, an Arcane Battle Mage gains a bonus feat. At each such opportunity, she can choose a metamagic feat, an item creation feat, or Spell Mastery. The Arcane Battle Mage must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including caster level minimums.

Force Specialization: (Ex): An Argent Battle Mage gains a +2 competence bonus on attack rolls made with her force spells. She also adds a +1 bonus to each die of damage dealt by spells she casts with the force descriptor. If the force spell doesn’t deal damage expressed by dice, she adds only a +1 bonus to the total damage dealt. For example, a magic missile cast by a 9th-level Wizard/1st-level Argent Battle Mage deals 1d4+2 points of damage per missile. A 9th-level Wizard/4th-level Argent Battle Mage deals 4d6+7 points of force damage with her Mordenkainen’s sword spell.

Energy Thesis (Ex): Beginning at first level the Argent Battle Mage discovers that it is easier to manipulate the energies of their force spells. Whenever an Argent Battle Mage casts a spell with the force descriptor they may apply any metamagic they know to that spell without increasing the spell’s casting time. Also, whenever an Argent Battle Mage applies a metamagic feat to a force spell, the total adjustment to the spell’s level is reduced by 1. This increases to a reduction of 2 at level 5, and finally 3 at level 10. This ability cannot reduce the total adjustment below 0.

Arcane Reflex (Sp): Beginning at 2nd level, an Argent Battle Mage gains exceptional awareness of her surroundings by being vigilant of the weave, and adds her class level to her initiative.

Force Armor (Ex): At 2nd level and higher, an Argent Battle Mage gains more benefit from defensive force spells than other characters. If she casts a force spell that provides an armor bonus or a shield bonus to Armor Class, she increases the spell’s normal armor bonus by 2. For example, mage armor normally adds an armor bonus of +4 to the caster’s AC, but an Argent Battle Mage with this ability who casts mage armor adds an armor bonus of +6 to her AC.

Overload (Ex): An Argent Battle Mage of 3rd level or higher is able to surpass conventional restraints of arcane magic. Whenever she casts a force spell of 1st through 5th level that deals damage, the Argent Battle Mage can deal maximum damage with that spell as if empowered by the Maximize Spell metamagic.

The first time this feature is used will not result in any adverse effect. If this feature is used again before a long rest, the Argent Battle Mage takes 1d12 necrotic damage per spell level, immediately after the spell is cast. Each time this feature is used before a long rest, the damage is increased by 1d12 per spell level. This damage ignores resistances and immunities.

Extended Energy (Ex): Starting at 4th level, Whenever an Argent Battle Mage casts a spell with the force descriptor that has a duration other than instantaneous, that duration is doubled.

Power Overwhelming (Ex): At 6th level and higher, the Argent Battle Mage’s force spells become especially potent, breaking through spell resistance more readily than normal. She gains a +2 bonus on caster level checks to overcome a creature's spell resistance with a force spell. In addition, the DC required to counter or dispel the Argent Battle Mage’s force spells increases by 4.

Force Abeyance (Ex): Due to her improved understanding of magical force, an Argent Battle Mage of 7th level or higher can hold arcane forces at bay. She subtracts her Spellcraft rank from damage dealt by any force spell or effect against her. A force spell producing multiple attacks, such as magic missile, is considered a single attack for this purpose; deduct the number of ranks from the total damage dealt by the spell, not the damage dealt by each individual missile.

Force Disruption (Su): As a standard action, an 8th level Argent Battle Mage can attempt to dispel a single force spell or effect within 60 feet (even those normally immune to dispel magic, such as wall of force). If he succeeds on a caster level check (DC 11 + opposing caster’s level), the force effect is disrupted. This immediately dispels the effect and deals 1d6 points of force damage per level of the dispelled spell to all creatures and objects within 10 feet of the unbound spell. For example, if an Argent Battle Mage Disrupts another caster’s wall of force, the released spell energy would deal 5d6 points of force damage to anyone within 10 feet of the wall’s former location. This damage cannot be increased by any spells or abilities.

Energy Mastery (Ex): A seasoned Argent Battle Mage has complete mastery over force spells. Whenever a 10th level Argent Battle Mage casts a spell with the force descriptor that deals damage, increase the size of the damage die by one category.(i.e.: A magic missile would deal 1d6+1 damage instead of the usual 1d4+1)
