The save DC for this effect is Charisma based.
Daylight Aura (Su) As soon as a beacon mothlet takes flight, it generates a powerful glow that mimics the effect of a daylight spell.
Skills A beacon moth gains a +4 racial bonus on all Listen and Spot checks and a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks. Beacon moths can take 10 on Climb checks, even if threatened or distracted.

Strategies and Tactics[edit]

While a beacon mothlet normally flees from battle, cornered specimens attack with their powerful mandibles. Those with a master can be trained to fight in battle like any other familiar. A beacon mothlet only uses its dazzling wings power if seriously outnumbered, ordered to by a master, or if it has been gravely injured.

Ecology[edit]

Becon mothlets, much like their bigger cousins the beacon mothsDragon Magazine #322, have been the result of the mad experiments of the breeding experiments of the wizards of Balefire. While some have escaped into the wilderness of the Plane of Shadow, most are kept and bred in captivity.

Environment: Plane of Shadow of any underground

Typical Physical Characteristics: The average beacon mothlet is almost 3 feet long and a wing span of 10 feet. Like most moths, a large pair of furry antennae juts from their foreheads, granting them considerable perception. Beacon mothlets have a dull green abdomen that shines with a brilliant green-white light when they use their special abilities.

Alignment: Always neutral

Beacon mothlets as familiars[edit]

Characters with access to the Improved Familiar feat and an arcane spellcaster level of 3 or higher can acquire a beacon mothlet as a familiar.

Beacon mothlets whose masters know the language of Battle Signals, FlagHeroes of Battle can use their abdomen to blink messages. This enables them to activate spell trigger items, with a -4 penalty to their Use Magic Device check.
