Dangerous Divination

An arcane and dangerous version of the divination spell, it can yield more information, but at a steep risk. This spell behaves as divination except it is capable of delving deeper into subjects, farther into time, or even divine things protected from divination. Unlike the spell, the success chance of the divination are 20% lower. However if successful, it will yield a small paragraph worth of information instead of a short phrase.

If used to divine farther into time, each additional week in the future decreases the success chance by 5%.

If used to divine a being or object protected from divination, such a creature under the effect of mind blank, decrease the success chance by 2% per caster level of the effect. If the use attempts to divine through an Elder Evil's Anathemtic Secrecy, the success chance is reduced by 70%.

The following effects can be combined and success chance cannot drop below 5%.

However, on a failure, the caster takes an amount of backlash damage and other harmful effects. If the caster was making a regular divination, a failure causes the caster to lose hit points equal to her caster level. If the caster was attempting to gain more information or divine farther into the future, she takes 1d4 damage per caster level instead. If the caster was attempting to divine a protected creature, she instead takes 1d6 damage per caster level of the protective effect. If the caster was attempting to divine through an elder evil's anathemic secrecy, she instead takes 40d6 damage and is disintegrated if she reaches 0 or lower. The loss of hit points caused by this effect cannot be prevented or resisted, and a character killed by backlash damage loses an additional level if and when she is brought back to life.

Only the initial failure deals this damage; trying again only ends in a regular failure as per divination.

Material Components: Incense worth at least 25 gp.

Focus: The skull of a creature who used to have Dark Insight.
