Housemaid spiders are a variety of monstrous spider modified by the drow for use as house pets, companions and providers of poison and silk. They're generally docile and only occasionally trained for combat. Their sensory abilities make them apt guards.
A typical housemaid spider is a purplish-black color with a shiny body. It's belly and footpads are generally fuzzy with hairs for detecting movement on their webs. Though, some breeds are hairy and tarantula-like. Recently, hairless breeds and pale varieties have come into vogue. Females lay clutches of eggs (4d3 eggs) twice a year for the first 5 years of their lives. Hatchlings mature to adulthood in 9 months and can live up to 8 years in domestication.
An adult housemaid spider is worth 25 gp. Breeding females and special varieties are often sold for more (around 25% markup).
A housemaid spider uses Dexterity for grappling, Climb and Jump checks. A housemaid spider applies its Wisdom modifier for determining skill points per HD. It gains a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks and a +2 racial bonus on its other racial skills. It advances by Magical Beast HD. Its racial class skills and modifiers are:
Despite being magical beasts, housemaid spiders are handled and trained as domestic animals.
A housemaid spider typically uses its False Swipe bite to deal nonlethal damage
Poison (Ex): A housemaid spider has a poisonous bite. The save DC is Constitution-based. The initial damage is semiconsciousness for 1 minute followed by unconsciousness for 1 hour. A housemaid spider is immune to its own poison as well as drow poison.
Webbing (Ex): A housemaid spider can spin webs (taking 1 minute to cover a 5' expanse) or loose threads of line to carry itself at its leisure. A single strand is strong enough to support the spider and one creature of the same size.
When grappling, a housemaid spider may attempt to bind a creature instead of making a bite attack, granting itself a +4 bonus on grapple checks for this purpose as it wraps up its opponent in binding threads. If its check is successful, the target becomes entangled and pinned. When no longer grappled, the creature can escape with a successful Escape Artist (DC 9) or burst it with a Strength check (DC 13). Both are standard actions. The check DCs are Constitution-based, and the Strength check DC includes a +4 racial bonus.
Creatures approaching a housemaid spider's web must succeed on a DC 20 Spot check to notice the web; otherwise they stumble into it and become trapped. Attempts to escape or burst the webbing gain a +5 bonus if the trapped creature has something to walk on or grab while pulling free. Each 5-foot section has 4 hit points and damage reduction 5/—.
A housemaid spider can move across a web at its climb speed.
Special Resistances (Ex): A housemaid spider gains a +4 bonus on saves against poisons and the effects of swarms as well as a +4 bonus on Will saves against spell effects. Additionally, a housemaid spider gains a +4 bonus against being tripped, knocked prone or getting rendered flat-footed.
Handling & Training
A housemaid spider can be taught the following special tricks in addition to those listed under Handle Animal.
Mark Poison (DC 15): A housemaid spider attempts to locate and gestures toward nearby poisons with a successful Survival skill check (in place of other skill checks when searching or attempting to locate poisons).
Understand Language (DC 20): A housemaid spider can understand commands given in the language (such as Elven or Drow Sign Language). It only carries out commands given in understood languages. Additionally, it empathically understands the emotional of those creatures communicating in that language.
Despite being a magical beast, a housemaid spider can be chosen as a starting animal companion and is treated as an animal for the purposes of its masters spells and abilities.
