Medusine[edit]

A distant cousin of medusas, medusines are less human-like and possess lesser inherent powers. While medusas are almost human-like, medusines are humanoids with eyeless snake-hair. Their bodies are covered in greenish skin peppered with small scales and they have serpentine eyes which can be in various colors. They have vestigial snake tails, which are small and weak. A medusine’s stare can be dangerous, especially if trained.

Due to their nature as monsters, medusines are outcasts and rarely live in civilized society. Many congregate in their own communities, or around medusas, who typically treat them as lessers. It is not uncommon for medusines to become adventurers of sorts, oftentimes to seek power or even acceptance. Stereotypically medusines are rather aloof, headstrong and ill-tempered. However this is usually a result of upbringing rather than natural disposition.

Medusines are almost always female, but 1-out-of-100 are born male, making them either prized by their brethren, or reviled.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • +2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma, -2 Constitution: Medusines are typically graceful and alluring individuals, but are relatively fragile.
  • Humanoid (Reptilian): While warm-blooded, a medusine’s serpentine features is enough to qualify them as reptilian.
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a medusine has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Medusine base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Darkvision: A medusine can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and a medusine can function just fine with no light at all.
  • Medusa Blood (Ex): A medusine counts as a medusa for the purpose of prerequisites, and is likewise harmed by any effect which would be harmful to a medusa. Additionally they are immune to a Medusa’s Petrifying Gaze.
  • Natural Armor (Ex): A medusine has a natural armor bonus of +1.
  • Snake Hair (Ex): A medusine’s hair is made of non-venomous snakes which lack eyes. She may use her snakes to attack as an unarmed strike. While doing so, she gains the benefits of Improved Unarmed Strike which deals piercing damage. If the medusine has levels in a class which grants an unarmed strike damage progression, she counts as 1 level higher for the purpose of determining the damage of her snake hair unarmed strike.
  • Stony Gaze (Su): As a 1 round action, a medusine can use a vestigial petrifying gaze against one opponent within 30 feet in her line of sight. When she does so her eyes become illuminated with a fell light and she must focus on her foe, giving them a sure tell to flee or avert their gaze. This is a gaze attack, but no other creatures are affected. As long as the target stays in line of sight the gaze can effect them, even if they move farther than the gaze's initial range. The target must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + ½ the medusine’s class level + her Charisma modifier). On a failed save, the target's body partially petrify, dealing them 1d4 + the medusine's Charisma bonus in damage and leaving them Staggered for 1 round. On a successful save the target is Staggered for 1 round, but undamaged. After using her stony gaze, a medusine must wait for 1d4 rounds before using it again.

Alternate Racial Features[edit]

  • Half-Blood: The direct offspring between a medusine and a human still looks very much like a medusine but their abilities are less pronounced in exchange for versatility. A medusine with this alternate racial feature gains a +2 bonus on either Dexterity or Charisma, the human subtype and an extra skill point per level. They ignore the disguise penalty from disguising as another race when disguising as a human. This alternate racial feature modifies the medusine’s ability score adjustment, subtype and replaces natural armor.
  • Head of Tails: Instead of snake heads, the medusine’s hair is composed of snake tails. She may hold any items in her hair, but cannot use it to wield weapons or activate magic items. As a swift action, the medusine may retrieve an item stowed on her, but not a concealed item, to hold in her hair or to one of her free hands. A medusine with this alternate racial trait cannot take the Deadly Serpent option of the Medusa’s Gift feat. This alternate racial feature replaces Snake Hair.
  • Magic of the Gorgons: A medusine with this alternate racial feature gains a +1 bonus on the DCs of her transmutation spells and spells with the [earth] descriptor. A medusine with this alternate racial trait cannot take the Baneful Gaze option of the Medusa’s Gift feat. This alternate racial feature replaces Stony Gaze.
  • Serpent Spit: Instead of a gaze, some medusine are able to spit from their snake hair. As a standard action, she may make a ranged touch attack within 30 feet. If the attack hit the target become blinded for 1 round. If the medusine has the Venomous Hair feat, this spit carries the same poison. A medusine with this alternate racial trait cannot take the Baneful Gaze option of the Medusa’s Gift feat. This alternate racial features replaces Stony Gaze.
  • Scholar of Stone: Some medusines developed a keen intellect in pursuit of magical talent, gaining a +2 bonus to Intelligence rather than Charisma. This alternate racial feature modifies the medusine’s ability score adjustment.
