Eats people to steal their forms, decorates weaker forms with additional eldritch parts. 20 1 Good Good Good Poor Alternate Magic Full

Morphovore[edit]

Devourers of form, eaters of shape, any horse or husky you see might secretly be one of these, especially if it has tentacles.

Making a Morphovore[edit]

Morphovores pick up abilities from adventuring.

Abilities: Morphovores barely even have their own ability scores, a Morphovore with 3s across the board would still be playable, albeit not as able to make use of its natural form.

Races: Eldritch Horrors and Microforged Conglomerates would be obvious choices.

Alignment: Any.

Starting Gold: 1d6×10 gp (35 gp).

Starting Age: Complex.

Table: The Morphovore

Hit Die: d8

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Morphovore.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Morphovores are proficient with simple weapons and light armor.

Take Form (Ex): By spending an hour completely consuming a slain creature, the Morphovore can learn how to mimic that creature's form perfectly. At any time as a full-round action, the Morphovore can transform into an exact copy of the creature, with the same statistics, mental and physical abilities, skills and feats, and all other properties except alignment, memories, personality, character level, and Morphovore level (for abilities that measure that, such as Shift Points). However, they cannot cast spells or spell-like abilities granted by class features from their taken form, and any per-day abilities start out depleted and must be restored with 8 hours of rest while in the form. Damage, ability damage, status effects and spell effects, and other such things are retained. Any status effects that the Morphovore becomes immune to are tracked, but cannot be gained while immune and have no effect until transforming into a form that is susceptible to them. In its new form, the Morphovore gains the ability to change back to its original form as a full-round action, and has a number of Shift Points equal to the difference between the creature's CR and the Morphovore's character level, and gains the ability to use them on any Shifts the Morphovore was able to in its natural form.

The Morphovore can only remember a number of forms equal to their class level, if they learn a new form beyond that maximum they must forget an old one. They cannot transform into a creature with a CR higher than their character level even though they can learn the form.

Shift Points (Ex): While in normal form, the Morphovore has a number of Shift Points equal to their class level. As a Swift Action, the Morphovore can reallocate all of their Shift Points to any shifts in the table with a total point cost no greater than the number of Shift Points they currently have. No individual Shift may cost more than half their class level, rounded up. When transforming, all shifts are deallocated.

Shifts
Point Cost Name Effect
1 Tentacles +4 to Grapple checks, two secondary tentacle slam attacks (1d3 damage if medium)
1 Thick skin +4 Natural Armor
1 Disguise Apply a disguise as though they rolled a natural 20 on their check as part of allocating this shift.
1 Olfactor Gain Scent.
2 Swimmer Gain a 50' swim speed.
2 Stinger Gain a secondary stinger attack (1d4 damage if medium). It has a Constitution-based poison that deals 1d4 Strength initial and secondary damage.
2 Stretchy Gain 5' of natural reach, squeeze without penalty.
2 Bigger Increase in size one category, apply stat changes as appropriate: SRD:Improving_Creatures#Size_Increases.
2 Smaller Decrease in size one category, apply stat changes as appropriate: SRD:Improving_Creatures#Size_Increases.
3 Even Bigger Increase in size one category, apply stat changes as appropriate: SRD:Improving_Creatures#Size_Increases.
3 Even Smaller Decrease in size one category, apply stat changes as appropriate: SRD:Improving_Creatures#Size_Increases.
4 Regeneration Regeneration 2/character level. Fire and Acid deal normal damage. Does not function while immune to nonlethal damage.
4 Much Bigger Increase in size two categories, apply stat changes as appropriate: SRD:Improving_Creatures#Size_Increases.
4 Much Smaller Decrease in size two categories, apply stat changes as appropriate: SRD:Improving_Creatures#Size_Increases.
7 Undying Cannot die. If reduced below negative their max HP, cannot act even if for some reason they're not unconscious.

Favorite Template: At level 2, the Morphovore chooses an LA +0 template and learns to apply it as a 1 point Shift. Every 2 levels after, the Morphovore learns a template with an LA 1 higher and learns to apply it as a 1 point higher Shift (+1 for 2 points at 4, +2 for 3 points at 6, and so on). Applying a template shift is harder than applying other shifts, so when the Morphovore wants to deallocate shift points from a template shift, or allocate shift points to a template shift, it takes a full-round action instead of a swift action.

Switch Form (Ex): At level 3, the Morphovore is able to transform directly from one learned form to another as a full-round action without turning back to its original form.

Morphovore Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge Dungeoneering can research Knowledge Dungeoneering to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge Dungeoneering
DC Result
5 Morphovores can take anyone's form.
10 They take their forms by eating their victims.
15 The Morphovore is still moderately dangerous in natural form due to their shift abilities.
20 There could be a Morphovore behind you right now!
