Replace XP Components with Uses Per Level[edit]

This variant rule is to address the following problems, listed in order of priority to fix (does not mean that higher list items are actually more problematic): 1. XP components don't necessarily limit a spell's spam-ability 2. People tend to not like spending XP or keeping track of it

The Uses Per Level Variant[edit]

Spells and powers with XP components no longer require XP to be cast or manifested. Instead, if a character uses a spell or power in any way (other than crafting items through item creation feats) that normally has an XP component, then that character can't use any abilities that would normally have XP components anymore until the character levels up. Once that character levels up, they may use another spell or power with an XP component again.

Consumables[edit]

Using consumable items, such as scrolls, potions, etc., might immediately be seen as a very easy way around this, but that is not the case. They are not exempt from this rule. Using a scroll of wish counts as the use of wish for this level. You cannot use wish again in any way until the next time you level up.

Crafting[edit]

Using XP to create items via Item Creation feats or similar means ignores this rule.

Use Per Level Per Spell or Power[edit]

Originally, this variant rule was that it was tracked individually for each spell and power with an XP component. For example, you can cast wish and atonement during the same level, but you couldn't cast either twice. I'd recommend doing it this way instead, but I'm a bit lost on how one would keep track of that.
