This variant rule heavily use the wiki's balance guideline as a point of reference and in it actual rules. If your game do not follow similar philosophy it might be advisable to not use this variant rule or apply it with caution.

Revised Feats, Flaws and Traits[edit]

In 3.5e (and 3.0e) feats are rare goods that must not be squandered, which is unfortunate since characters will mostly take feats that grant them sheer power boost and avoid flavorful feats they would normally take. Flaws are a flawed idea, with extremely weak penalties and most of all completely lack flavor. Many build suffer from intense feat starvation and few classes grant bonus feat (of course the wizard does!), in an attempt to correct this here is a revised version of feats, flaws and traits rules:

  • Characters receive an extra bonus feat at 1st level or upon their first character level. They still need to meet all prerequisite for that feat.
  • Character receive a feat at each odd level instead of the normal dnd feat progression (1st, 3rd and each 3 level thereafter).
  • Characters are allowed to take two flaws, the first flaw grant a feat up to the game balance point while the second flaw can only grant a feat from a balance point below the game balance level. Flaws cannot grant unquantifiable feat without DM's careful approval.
  • Characters are allowed three traits, since traits are mostly for flavor and minor character tweaking limiting them to one or two is counter productive with what they are. At the DM's option the player may take a flaw for an additional trait, this flaw do not count against the character normal flaw limit.

Flaws[edit]

All of the Unearthed Arcana flaws are thrash, the penalty they give is waaaay too low for what a feat is worth (especially in higher than moderate game). A game should only allow meaningful flaws; flaws that actually penalize the player correctly. Many of the flaws found here are meaningful flaws while very if any of those published under unearthed arcana are. With that said it is better to use unearthed arcana flaws in a moderate or low balance point game.
