Soul Trap

Upon touching a living creature, a disruptive burst of purple energy runs through their body. Using this spell, the caster can ensnare a creature's spiritual essence when it dies and capture it in a soul gem. For the creature to be trapped, it needs to be killed while the spell is active, and the caster needs to have a soul gem on his person that is large enough to hold the creature.

Despite the spell's indicative name, the creature's actual soul is not trapped, but rather the energy that is released upon the moment of the creature's death, destruction or return to its native plane (depending on its creature type). As such, a creature that had its essence stored in a soul gem can still be revived with resurrection or more powerful spells that return the dead to life.

If more instances of this spell are active on a single creature when it dies, the 'soul' goes to the spellcaster with the highest caster level. In the case of a tie, opposed caster level checks should be made until a winner is declared.

Focus: An empty soul gem of sufficient capacity.
