Who would have thought that an amusing scholarly error would prove to be a pivotal part of my deception? ‘Lich’ mistranslated as ‘witch’, and the rest is history.

Combat[edit]

Fighting against Orcus is a multi-stage ordeal, as he begins any and all combat maintaining his disguise as a living demon. Only when this first form is defeated does he unveil his true, undead nature: a form that he needs for his own survival as much as he despises it. This same attitude of hatred dominates his style of combat; no sooner does Orcus summon undead minions than he seeks to use them to an ultimately destructive end, both for his adversaries and the undead themselves.

The following abilities are common to both forms of Orcus:

Alter Reality (Sp): Orcus has the ability to advance his portfolio. This is considered identical to the wish spell, but may only be used to produce effects appropriate to Orcus’ portfolio or goals. Orcus may only use this ability once per minute.

Godlike: Although Orcus is not a true deity, he has many of the powers of such. He can grant spells to clerics, and gives access to the Blood, Chaos, Corrupt, Evil, and Undeath domains. His favoured weapon is the heavy mace, and his portfolio is blood, undeath, hatred, and regenesis.

Additionally, Orcus is immune to any attack that changes his form, mind-affecting effects, ability damage, ability drain and energy drain, unless such an effect comes from a creature that has a caster level or character level (or CR, for monsters) over 20.

Lastly, Orcus can burn off some of his essence to stop magic dead in its tracks. As a free action that can be used outside of his turn, Orcus can lose (1/10 of max hp) hit points to counter any spell, supernatural ability or spell-like ability in Medium range, as if by greater dispel magic (although it can counter supernatural and spell-like abilities as if they were spells). This ignores temporary hit points, and can be used any number of times. For any ability with an ongoing or permanent duration, this merely suppresses it for 6 rounds.

Harvest Moon (Su): Rather than the aura powers possessed by demons, Orcus radiates an aura of necromantic energy that infuses itself into any dying and undead creatures. All living creatures capable of becoming undead that are slain within 1000 feet of Orcus are automatically reanimated one round after their deaths, acquiring the swordwraith template and spawning with full hit points.

Undead within the same radius are magically compelled to serve Orcus, forcing them to make a Will save (DC 36 or 37, depending on what form he is in) or obey his command for the current round. Mindless undead receive no saving throw and are automatically under Orcus’ control; if they are under the control of another, the controller must instead save to avoid losing control of their undead creatures.

Lord of the Abyss (Su): As a being of once-deific might combining the attributes of a demon and a lich, Orcus’ power is capable of matching anything in the Abyss. He receives a +8 enhancement bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls, a +8 resistance bonus to all saves and a +6 deflection bonus to AC. Orcus also has maximum hit points per hit die.

Ravage Form (Sp): As a full-round action, Orcus may bestow his ravage on a creature eligible to gain a level. That creature gains its first level in the ravaged by Orcus racial paragon class. If Orcus attempts to ravage an unwilling creature, it receives a DC 3? Will save to resist (Cha-based).

Tribute to the Doomed (Su): Whenever Orcus uses an ability, cast a spell, or uses a spell-like ability, an undead minion is automatically summoned to any location he can see within Medium range. The undead spawned has the following characteristics and gains power based on the action used with the ability, according to the table below:

  • Undead Type
  • Mindless, with Wisdom and Charisma scores of 1.
Action Size Hit Points Base Attack Bonus Strength Score
Swift Medium 120 hp +10 24
Standard Large 240 hp +15 36
Full-Round Huge 480 hp +20 48

These undead last until the beginning of Orcus' next turn or until destroyed. Once spawned, they automatically attempt to attack the last opponent targeted by one of Orcus’ abilities, deferring to the nearest enemy if the previous criterion is not possible. By taking an immediate action, an undead minion can suffer an effect directed towards Orcus, provided that it can also be a valid target of the effect.

Demon Form (Tenebrous)[edit]

These abilities are only useable by Orcus’ ‘living’ demonic façade, referred to hereafter as Tenebrous.

Descent (Ex): As a swift action, Tenebrous can discorporate into a pool of blood. Transforming in this fashion makes Tenebrous unable to perform any other actions than movement (which he may do at half speed) until the beginning of his next turn. While he is in this form, Tenebrous may move freely through occupied spaces without provoking attacks of opportunity, and cannot make attacks of opportunity against any creatures that move through his space.

This pool of blood contaminates the space within with Abyssal energies, dampening magical effects as an antimagic field so long as creatures stand in the pool and for 1 round thereafter. Living creatures who share Tenebrous’ space during this time must also make a Fortitude save at the point of contact (DC 37) or be nauseated on their next turn.

Undead, meanwhile, are bolstered by the profane magic contained within this sanguineous form, gaining the numerical enhancement bonuses from Tenebrous’ lord of the Abyss ability and bestowing upon them the ability to cast spell-like abilities from Tenebrous’ SLA list (counting towards the usage limit where applicable). An undead cannot cast a spell-like ability if the spell in question could not be cast by a sorcerer of equivalent CR, and casting such an ability automatically destroys the undead that used it.

Pretender to the Throne (Ex): When the demon known to the world as Tenebrous is destroyed, the true form of Orcus emerges. In this form, Orcus has a new body, new statistics, and new abilities. The transformation sears the flesh from Orcus’ form, immolating it and any creature within Close range for 240 points of damage, half of which is fire damage and the other half vile damage.

Undead Form (Orcus)[edit]

These abilities are unique to Orcus' undead form.

Witch-King (Ex): As a demonic lich, Orcus shares many of the traits of a demon despite his undead nature. Even as an undead, he retains a Base Attack Bonus equal to his Hit Dice in addition to possessing immunity to fire, resistance to acid 20, cold 20 and electricity 20 and telepathy out to 1000ft. Lastly, in his undead state he gains additional hit points per HD and a bonus on Fortitude saves based on his Charisma modifier, replacing the standard Constitution modifier.
