The longspear is a longer version of the spear. Longspears are made to be flexible, allowing them to be a finesse weapon, but cannot be thrown (except as an improvised weapon).

Their length classifies them as a polearm for the Polearm Master feat's opportunity attack reach ability (see Player's Handbook (5e) p.168).

The longspear is an Exotic Weapon. If you are not proficient with this (or any exotic) weapon, you use it at disadvantage as well as not adding your proficiency bonus.

If you are both a Monk and are proficient with this weapon, it is treated as a Monk Weapon for you.
