Once three wise kings, the Underkings sought to repair an injustice done to their people and instead fell into the thrall of eldritch power.
Level: 8th
Binding DC: 30
Special Requirement: Yes
Legend[edit]
Although history forgot their name, there once was three wise Kings who ruled over their respective kingdoms, until a powerful High King came and forced them under his rule. The Kings were allowed to rule their lands, but had to pay a great amount of tributes, which brought harm and suffering upon their people. The Kings sought power to overthrow, or at least free themselves from the reign of the High King.
Their quest for power led them to dark insight, which led them to the abyss, which led them to the Outer Reaches of the Cosmos. Using the power they acquired from the Outer Reaches, their bodies became twisted and wraith-like, their minds soon followed, and soon they preyed on their very own kingdoms, turning their knights into their agents of destruction. Their quest for freedom and peace turned into a quest for knowledge and power and brought great ruin upon the world.
The High King, unable to defeat them, beseeched the Gods for help. While the Gods could not fight or comprehend the power of the Outer Reaches, they called great cataclysm on the Underkings' Kingdom, forcing them to retreat into the dark void that cradled their new form. Cut from the mortal world, the Underkings' body became more and more like the dark void until they finally faded. Their defeat made the High King, once a tyrant, into a much wiser man, and his rule was wise and peaceful.
Special summoning[edit]
In order to summon this vestige, you need a dark insight score of at least 10.
Manifestation[edit]
The Underkings each appear as a wraith-like being, with an ethereal smoky body and horrible appearance; each King is only slightly different from the others. Upon being summoned, the binder must kneel before one of the Kings, receiving his crown.
Sign[edit]
The binder takes on the same wraith-like appearance of the Underkings; the crown of one of the Underking also rests on the binder's brow. Which crown the binder selects also determines her appearance.
Influence[edit]
The binder becomes arrogant, power-hungry, and prideful; she believes she can handle any kind of power. She believes she has the right to rule by divine right and will not bow before Kings and Gods. The binder also becomes obsessed with dark insight and the Cosmos and knowledge related to both subjects.
Granted Abilities[edit]
Crown of the King[edit]
Chosen upon binding the Underkings, the binder must select one of the following three crowns to rest upon her brow. The binder only gains the benefit of the crown while manifesting the Underkings's sign.
Crown of the Deep King: The binder becomes covered in poisonous growth and takes on a foul odor; she becomes immune to acid damage, disease, and poison. This crown is associated with acid damage.
Crown of the Frozen King: The binder looks frozen and rigid; she becomes immune to cold damage, paralysis, and stunning. This crown is associated with cold damage.
Crown of the Scorched King: The binder looks as if burnt to cinders; she becomes immune to fire damage, compulsion, and fear effects. This crown is associated with fire damage.
Darkwraith[edit]
While manifesting the sign of the Underkings, the binder may replicate the effect of ethereal jaunt with an indefinite (D) duration at will.
Great Power[edit]
The binder gains both Powerful Build and the benefits of the Oversized Grip feat.
Outer Reaches of the Cosmos[edit]
Once per binding, the binder can communicate with the Outer Reaches of the Cosmos. This replicates the effect of commune with universe, but with a madness cost of 5.
Voidblade[edit]
As a move action, the binder may summon a +5 Phantom falchion to her hand; the falchion deals 5d6 extra energy damage based on the chosen crown. If the falchion leaves the binder's hand, it disappears immediately into the abyss. After the pact is done, the falchion vanishes, leaving a black gem behind containing all souls that were trapped inside.
As standard action, the binder may sweep the falchion, unleashing a 60 ft. cone-shaped spread of energy, dealing 1d10 energy damage (based on the chosen crown) per binder level with a reflex save to halve damage. Once you have used this ability, you cannot do so for 5 rounds.
