Animal of the Land[edit]
An animal of the land can run around and also breathes air.
Animals with this template are either called "animals of the land" or "land animals", where the word "animal" is replaced by the name of the animal, such as "whales of the land" or "land whales".
Animals of the land typically roam the terrain around bodies of water. Since their swim speeds are hampered, they prefer to utilize land to their advantage.
Such animals are adapted away from their counterparts with their limbs and physique modified for the change in environment, such as rougher scales or shaggier fur.
Creating an Animal of the Land[edit]
Animal of the land is an inherited template applied to animals. Applying it to animals that already have a land speed is strange and redundant, but if you want them to be better at it, that works.
Template Traits[edit]
- Landbound: An animal of the land loses the aquatic subtype if it had it. If it had fins, it now has quadrupedal legs. An animal of the land gains a +4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground).
- Speeds: The base animal's burrow speed, climb speed, fly speed and swim speeds are reduced by half (minimum of 5 feet or 10 feet for flying), rounding down to the nearest five-foot increment. Any flight maneuverability is reduced by 1 step if the animal can fly. The base animal gains a land speed equal to its previous highest base speed.
- Gulp of Air (Ex): An animal of the land can breathe air and can survive indefinitely on land. It can still also breathe water if the base animal could.
- Skills: The base animal halves any racial bonus on Swim checks.
