Originally commissioned by a rich ruler who wanted rare and exotic animals captured and brought to his menagerie, these items were once banned in many civilized nations because it was rumored that they were used to facilitate illegal trafficking and slavery of intelligent creatures. However, legitimate markets for the items still exist.
An arcane animal carrier is usually a rectangular box, apparently made of wood or metal, that behaves much like a bag of holding in that it is an extradimensional space used for storage, but contains an environment suitable to sustain most forms of life.
When a creature enters an arcane animal carrier, the extradimensional space adapts itself to the creature's native environment, creating the appropriate terrain and environmental features (such as forests, desert, underground, etc.) as well as simulating day and night. The carrier cannot replicate extraplanar environments that are not normally found on the material plane, so while it could create a volcanic environment for a creature with the Fire subtype, it could not create an environment suffused with negative energy. Though the space in the carrier is limited, the environment shifts with the inhabiting creature's movements, creating the illusion of unlimited space. The terrain does no actual damage: fire does not burn, water does not drown, dirt does not suffocate. If multiple creatures enter the carrier, the environment is set by the first creature to enter, and remains until the last creature exits. The door can adapt itself to admit creatures of unusual proportions, but only to the limit of the size of creature it was designed to contain.
Additionally, enough food and water to sustain a creature for 1 day is provided every 24 hours; creature waste is eliminated within a minute.
While inside, the exit from the carrier is undetectable until the command word is spoken (typically "door" or "exit" by default, though the word can be reset to something less common), though it may be locked or barred from the outside, requiring a sunder attempt. From the outside looking in, one sees only the walls of the container and soft illumination; the illusory terrain is only visible from inside.
Three sizes of carriers exist, each manufactured to the specifications of varying creature sizes, as seen on the chart below.
Type | Size Limit | Weight | Interior Size¹ | Exterior dimensions | Hardness | Hit Points | Market Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Type I | Tiny | 15 lbs | 5' | 2'x1'x1.5' | 5 | 15 | 3,000 gp |
Type II | Medium | 85 lbs | 15' | 6'x3'x2' | 10 | 25 | 6,000 gp |
Type III | Huge | 400 lbs | 50' | 25'x15'x8' | 15 | 45 | 9,000 gp |
Lastly, bringing an arcane animal carrier into another extradimensional space is unadvisable, with results identical to a bag of holding.
Prerequisites: craft wondrous item, prestidigitation, create food and water, hallucinatory terrain, rope trick.
