This odd cursed item looks to be a ring fashioned from three black iron bands forged together, and was created by a wizard with a penchant for cruelty. As soon as the ring is put on, the inside of the ring will viciously snap inwards, launching an unavoidable called shot that deals 5 points of damage to the wearer's finger. The creature wearing the ring does not actually incur damage to its hit points, but will instantly lose their finger unless it has a damage reduction of at least 5. The ring's bite attack is magical, so DR/magic does not apply. The damage that severs the wielder's finger is vile damage, making it impossible to reattach the finger without the aid of magic.
Depending on the type of finger that the ring was put on, the wearer furthermore receives the following penalties:
- Little finger: -1 to Sleight of Hand checks involving the damaged hand
- Middle- or ringfinger: -1 to attack rolls with weapons and -2 to Sleight of Hand checks involving the damaged hand.
- Forefinger: -2 to attack rolls with weapons and -4 to Sleight of Hand checks involving the damaged hand.
- Thumb: You are treated as nonproficient with any weapon or shield wielded in the damaged hand and take a -6 penalty to any checks that involve grabbing, grappling, holding, or dextrously moving objects, including Sleight of Hand checks.
If the bite ring successfully bites off the target's finger, it inflicts a subtle curse that takes away one of the wearer's ring slots. Putting a ring on a different finger will not help; any ring worn over the first will simply not have an effect. The bite ring's curse is permanent until removed with remove curse, break enchantment, greater restoration or other curse-breaking effects.
