Evolved Undead, Variant[edit]

Creating an Evolved Undead[edit]

Evolved Undead is an acquired template that can be added to any creature of the Undead type. This template may be bestowed upon an Undead creature as part of its creation by character with the Corpsecrafter, Variant feat by doubling the amount of onyx needed to animate it (50gp per HD instead of 25gp), per instance of this template (so 2 instances would cost 75gp/HD). Only one instance of this template may be applied per Corpsecrafter feat the creator possesses.

Undead with this template choose 2 of the options below. This template may be gained multiple times, each time selecting 2 more options from below. Unless stated otherwise, each option may only be added once.

Evolved Options[edit]

  • Animated Corpse: The Undead gains bonus hp as if it were a Construct of its size. It may use warforged components and items for constructs only. It is healed by Repair spells as if it were a construct.
  • A Pale Horse: The Undead gains a +10ft bonus to its base land speed, which increases by +10ft per 5 HD it has. It also gains the Run feat. For zombies you may choose to have them lose the initial +10 speed bonus to instead remove their Single Actions Only special quality.
  • Aquatic: The Undead gains Sharky as a bonus feat. You do not suffer the effects of high pressure.
  • Bolstered Resistance: The Undead increases its Turn Resistance by 2 or by +1 per 3 HD (no TR is the same as TR +0), whichever is greater. The Undead's TR applies to any effect that specifically targets the undead specifically, such as turning and rebuking, but also on saves against effects like Command Undead or Undeath to Death. Controlled Undead have their TR ignored by their controller.
  • Chill of the Grave: The Undead gains the Cold subtype and Chilling Aura as a bonus feat. It also deals +1d6 cold damage with its melee attacks.
  • Continuous Search: +4 bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks, and they are always class skills. You are in constant search mode as the elf racial ability. Those who merely pass within 5 feet of a secret or concealed door is entitled to a Search check to notice it as if she were actively looking for it. If subject to a trap due to a missed search check, they gain half their HD as a bonus on AC or saves against the trap.
  • Decaying Form: The Undead is treated as having an evil alignment and the Willing Deformity feat for class and feat prerequisites. It also gains a bonus Deformity feat, and Deformity feats and Undead feats are treated as the same kind of feats.
  • Forte della Morte: The Undead increases its Strength score by 4 points and gains Powerful Build as a bonus feat.
  • Foul Presence: The Undead emits a constant Desecrate effect with a radius of 10ft per HD. If the Undead has 10 or more HD, it counts as an altar.
  • Hardened Flesh: The Undead gains an +2 enhancement bonus to its natural armor, which increases by 1 per 4 HD. It increases all Damage Reduction it has or gains by an equal amount, but does not gain any if it did not already possess it.
  • Knit the Bones, Mend the Flesh: The Undead gains Fast Healing 3. This stacks with any Fast Healing the Undead has or gains later.
  • Nimble Bones: The Undead increases its Dexterity score by 4 points and is never flatfooted on a surprise round or first round of combat, even if it has not acted yet.
  • Plague Spreader: Anything the Undead hits with its natural weapons or unarmed strikes must make a Fortitude save or be affected by a Contagion spell. Creatures hitting you with natural weapons and unarmed strikes suffer the same effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.
  • Rot Magic: The Undead gains Spell Resistance equal to 10 + the lower of its CR and HD + its Turn Resistance. Intelligent Undead may raise or lower their SR as a free action even if it isn't their turn. Controlled Undead have their SR ignored by their controller.
  • Soldier of the Damned: The Undead gains the effects of Greater Magic Weapon to any masterwork (magical or not) or natural weapon it wields and is proficient with. The effect is at a caster level equal to its HD. It also retains its weapon proficiencies.
  • Stench: Living creatures within 10 feet of the Undead must succeed on a Fortitude save or be sickened for as long as it remains within its Stench and for 1d6 rounds after. A creature that successfully saves cannot be affected again by the same creature’s stench for 24 hours. A delay poison or neutralize poison spell removes the effect from a sickened creature. Creatures with immunity to poison are unaffected, and creatures resistant to poison receive their normal bonus on their saving throws. If the Undead already had stench, double its area. The save DC is Charisma-based. This ability may be taken twice.

The following options may be selected at the cost of only being able to select a single option for 1 particular instance of this template and require the creator Corpsecrater to have an ECL of 8 or greater.

  • Because I Am Dead, I Can Take Off My Head: If you are dismembered, you are able to reattach your limbs as if you had regeneration by placing the limb to the stump for 1 round. In addition the limb need not be yours; any limb within one size category of you will do (and can hold items appropriate for it) though an inappropriately sized limb has a -2 penalty on all actions taken with the limb. After 24 hours foreign limbs will be reshaped into something appearing as your original limb.

If you are decapitated you do not immediately die but are unable to perform any actions until your head is placed back on a viable body. While unable to act, a DC 10 Heal check reveals you still live. You can survive decapitated for 3 days before you will expire. Your patchwork body makes you vulnerable to critical hits and precision damage, unlike a normal Undead. The Undead gains Remote Limbs as a bonus feat, except its parts are Undead not Constructs and you always know the location of your parts in relation to your own position. If the Undead has the Fall to Pieces feat, it retains its ability to move in swarm form and may enter or exit. swarm form as a move or swift action once per round.

  • Dread Warrior: The Undead's BAB improves one step (poor to average, average to good), its Fortitude save progression becomes good, and it gains the weapon, armor, and shield proficiencies of the Fighter class. The Undead gains the benefits all the Improved feats for various combat options (bull rush, disarm, feint, grapple, overrun, sunder, and trip) and the Improved Unarmed Strike, Power Attack, and Combat Expertise feats. It is treated as having these feats for the purpose of prerequisites.

If it already possesses a feat for one of the Improved combat options, the feat instead grants a +8 bonus instead of the usual +4 and ignores any size limitations (such as being unable to grapple creatures two or more size categories larger than you). If it has Improved Feint, it can feint as a swift action. If it already has Improved Unarmed Strike, it instead gains Superior Unarmed Strike ToB feat. If it already has Power Attack, it instead gains Heavy Power Attack. If it already has Combat Expertise, it instead gains Superior Expertise. This applies retroactively, even if it gains these feats at a later date.

  • What is Dead, May Never Die: Unless slain by positive energy, a holy weapon, inside a consecrated zone, while being turned or have its body destroyed, the Undead is not destroyed when brought to 0 hit point. Instead it falls inert for 1 minute, after which it is raised at 1 hit points. The Undead also no longer automatically fails saving throws on a natural 1.

The Undead gains Corpse Toughness and Lich Toughness as bonus feats. The Damage Reduction from those feats becomes Damage Resistance which reduces all hit point damage before applying other effects such as damage reduction or energy resistance. It works against physical damage as well as energy damage, even force damage. This damage resistance is still bypassed by what would normally bypass the augmented DR.
