The giant ants sometimes become exposed to radiation and chemicals underground. Those that survive are bigger and tougher than their companions.

Formed from normal giant ants, these mutants are sometimes taken in by underdark creatures and bred as mounts similar to heavy horses. As a result, they are a valid choice in place of a heavy horse for animal companions, mounts, and other circumstances. Due to their mindless nature, they are ridden and manipulated via chemical signaling typically placed in their saddles.

Carrying Capacity: A light load for a giant dire ant is up to 300 pounds; a medium load, 301–600 pounds; and a heavy load, 601–900 pounds. A giant dire ant can drag 4,500 pounds.


A giant dire ant not trained for war does not normally use its bite to attack. Its bite attack is treated as a secondary attack and adds only half the ant's Strength bonus to damage.

A giant dire ant can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a giant dire ant must hit with its bite attack.

Skills: *Giant dire ants have a +4 racial bonus on Survival checks when tracking by scent and a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks. A giant dire ant can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened.
