This giant pale green butterfly is hauntingly beautiful. From its head juts a helix spiral horn. It doesn't seem real, and perhaps it isn't...
The product of the mad experiments of a powerful dragon wizard, the moonlight butterfly is the result of converting magic-using maidens and turning them into beings of purest energy. It made them immortal, and the resulting species bred true, but it retained nothing of the original personality or mindset and the project was deemed a failure. The project was released into the wild, where the butterflies haunt enchanted forests and magical locations of the world.
Moonlight butterflies are hard to find and reclusive, in spite of their giant size and glowing ethereal bodies composed of raw magic made flesh. They hide in the daytime, and only come out under the light of the moon. Scholars know the moonlight butterfly feeds off ambient magical energy, but suspect they also absorb moonlight. That, or the moon gives off an alien radiation unto its own.
The butterflies are intelligent, if dimly, but have an elusive and animal-like mindset largely concerned with drinking magic and staying out of sight of predators. They are lax creatures difficult to provoke, but when called to fight (and escape is a non-option) they use the advantage of range to keep far from their attackers.
Moonlight butterflies are nearly 30 feet in wingspan, with a fairly tiny body. They don't seem to have a weight as they aren't composed of traditional matter. Moonlight butterflies understand, but do not speak, Celestial and Draconic.
Moonlight butterflies rather run than fight, but when called to fight they do so at extreme range, in order to keep safe. When reduced to 50% hp or less, they either heal or become aggressive and start employing the Moonlight Bomb. They rarely attack in melee with their horn, which has reach and counts as a lance for all purposes. However it deals pure untyped magic damage instead of piercing damage, and strikes as a touch attack.
If brought under 0 hp, the moonlight butterfly disintegrates into magic. However unless killed by lightning (which bypasses their regeneration) they will eventually reform elsewhere out of the currents of magic. If killed for real, they do not leave a corpse except for their horn, which is prized for its high magical capacity and often forged into magical lances and shields.
Drink Magic (Su): Moonlight butterflies eat by drinking in ambient magical energy and thus are always found in places of great magical potential such as ancient haunted forests, magic-scarred lands, and around loads of magical treasure. The rare of absorption is too slow to be harmful. However it can rest down on a surface within 30 feet of a source of magical energy and drink deeply. When it does, its regeneration rises to 30. It remains like this until it feels satisfied and takes off again (usually deploying a Moonlight Burst if threatened). It cannot fly while drinking like this, so it is vulnerable to melee attack at this time.
Immunities (Ex): The moonlight butterfly is immune to ability damage, ability drain, death effects, energy drain, mind-affecting effects, petrification, and polymorphing. It is also immune to "untyped" energy damage, such as that from a warlock's eldritch blast.
Moonlight Bomb (Su): The moonlight butterfly can drop a bomb immediately below its flight path which explodes in a 20 ft radius burst. Its damage is based on how wounded the butterfly is, dealing the difference between its current and maximum hp (to a maximum difference of 100 points), with a Reflex save for half. It can use this ability once every 1d4 rounds. DC 20, and the saving throw is Charisma based.
Moonlight Burst (Su): This ability can only be used immediately after the moonlight butterfly uses Drink Magic to recover. When taking back to the sky, as a swift action it can launch itself up on an explosion of magic. This deals 1d6 untyped damage per level to a 10 ft area burst centered on the butterfly and creatures fall prone. A successful Reflex save halves the damage and negates the prone attempt. DC 20, and the saving throw is Charisma based.
Moonlight Laser (Su): As a standard action the moonlight butterfly can project a powerful beam of untyped magic damage in a large sweeping ray. Trace a 120 ft path of contiguous 5 ft squares out to Long range (1300 ft for example creature), all creatures in the area must make a Reflex save or take 1d6 points of damage per level and fall prone. A successful save halves the damage and negates the prone attempt. It may use this laser once every 1d4 rounds. DC 20, and the saving throw is Charisma based.
Moonlight Hunter (Su): As a standard action the moonlight butterfly can release a swarm of untyped magical homing missiles. It duplicates the effect of magic missile except each missile deals 1d6 untyped damage, and it still counts as magic missile for the purposes of interacting with spells.
Moonlight Spear (Su): As a standard action the moonlight butterfly launches long range fast spears of untyped magic damage. Roll 1d8, the result is how many spears are fired out to Long range (1300 ft for example creature). Each spear is a ranged touch attack and deals 8 points of damage.
Regeneration (Ex): The moonlight butterfly's regeneration is bypassed by electricity damage. However if brought below 0 hp even by nonlethal damage, they still vaporize as they cannot remain solid while unconcious.
