The clockwork god Nym is an elusive deity, on an eternal mission to balance the multiverse.

Origin[edit]

The origin stories for Nym are many and usually rife with contradiction. The truth of the matter is, nobody really knows when or how he came to be. What is known is that he was a tremendously powerful deity in the past and was the creator of the foundational cogs that Mechanus is built upon. That is, pretty much all the actual "landmass" in Mechanus was built and engineered by Nym.

One such story of Nym's origin is that he created himself and sent himself to the beginning of time to ensure order would be maintained throughout existence. It is said that Nym now spends his time working on the creation of the "greater deity" version of himself: a task that will take him until the end of the multiverse.

Description[edit]

Nym takes the form of a eight-armed suit of mithral armor, powered by fast spinning golden cogs and silver machinery where muscles and organs would be. Each of his hands is a different tool, which he uses at incredible speeds and with divine skill to craft mechanical creations.

Nym is the creator of the Inevitables and holds the designs for any creature of the Construct type. Although he rarely takes any direct actions, even within Mechanus, Nym's goals are achieved through the Inevitables and his followers. His wishes are reflected through a group of golem overlords called "The 12". They have a direct link to him and push his greater agendas with plans that sometimes take eons to culminate.

Dogma[edit]

Let the clock turn and destroy those that unwind the gears
—Lectum of Clockwork

Followers of Nym seek to stop those that would alter reality or change the course of fate. They tirelessly work to undo the actions of individuals that manage to be unhindered by fate. They follow laws written in the Lectum of Clockwork: a holy book said to be dictated from "The 12", Nym's golem overlords.

The Lectum of Clockwork details many prophecies of the future and the plan for how those events must unfold. It also has rules that a follower of Nym must follow organized into "greater charges" and "lesser charges".

The greater charges of a follower of Nym is as follows:

  • Protect the integrity of space and time by destroying beings that attempt to alter it (unless doing so in the name of stopping another such being)
  • Protect the integrity of divinity by destroying beings who are attempting to ascend to godhood
  • Protect the integrity of mortality by destroying beings that attempt to cheat death using unnatural means

The lesser charges of a follower of Nym is as follows:

  • Punish those that try to avoid a punishment
  • Kill those that break a sworn oath or vow

Clergy and Temples[edit]

Although Nym was once an extremely powerful deity, his followers have dwindled into small groups scattered about the world. The religion has devolved into a cult, which fanatically worships Nym, despite his ambivalence to his followers.

The cult of Nym is quite resourceful and powerful, however. They sacred duty puts them in a position to be in conflict with some of the most powerful individuals that ever exist. They act in the same manner as the Inevitables although they are not always as single-minded with their pursuit of transgressors.

Unfortunately, the charges (and much of the Lectum of Clockwork) are very vague and present things in a black-and-white manner. This has caused many interpretations of the Lectum and religion to exist and many cultists of Nym have trouble working with cultists from other sects.
