The Far Realm is home to many horrors. Few are as horrible as the humanoid ones. Here the innocence of a human infant is warped and twisted in pale mockery, with small angel wings upon their back and their faces devoid of features beyond their one massive tooth filled mouth.
Putto grotesques are troubling senseless monsters from the far realm who resemble giant human infants, whose face is plastered over with shin obscuring their eyes, and whose mouths are far too large and filled with adult human teeth. It is said they are merely aspects from some other, more dreadful being and these beasts are but hungry tendrils into the world for whenever they arrive they herald a feast of flesh and slaughter as they childly giggle the entire time. Upon their back are wings, sometimes distorted and deformed and always too small or unmoving to actually keep them aloft by anything other than alien physics. Their bodies spark and crackle unnaturally as if their presence provokes storms, and their bodies are featureless inside and out. While not immune to critical hits, they do not seem to bleed and in fact crumble into piles of salt upon losing mass or dying.
If it unknown if putto grotesques are sapient. They are only dimly intelligent, ever-hungry, and only seem to work together accidentally as they descend en masse upon victims. However some have been known to have a preference with creatures under some manner of fear effect. Perhaps they taste the best.
A putto grotesques stands at 16 ft tall and their weight seems inconsistent and far too light for a creature of their size. The remaining salt pile left upon death comes in at 72 lbs (1 square foot). They do not seem to speak any language but seem to understand Celestial.
Combat[edit]
Though blind, the putto grotesques can see the living just fine. They are only truly blind in a place devoid of life. Ever hungry they drift towards their target laughing as they travel and driving their opponents to madness and fear. No one can be sure of the alien thoughts of the putto grotesques but they seem to understand, and encourage, fear. Perhaps it makes the bodies taste better.
The putto grotesques do not employ complex tactics, being fairly dim witted. When slain they crumble into salt and leave no body behind.
Aura of Terror (Su): Creatures who obtain line of sight to the horror of a hostile putto grotesques must make a DC 19 Will save or be shaken for as long as they can see or hear any putto grotesques + 1d4 rounds after. A successful save renders the creature immune to further attempts from any putto grotesques for 24 hours. The saving throw is Charisma based.
Blind: A putto grotesque is blind, and thus immune to dazzling and blindness. They "see" via Lifesight.
Crawling (Ex): A putto grotesque is nearly as good on all fours as they are on two. When prone they only take a -2 penalty to melee attack rolls and AC, and they may move up to half their normal move speed. When crawling they have the vertical clearance of a creature one size smaller.
Crushing Strength (Ex): While holding a grappled creature, the putto grotesque can take a full round action to begin squeezing their victim with a successful grapple check. Not only do they maintain the grapple and deal slam damage, the target takes 1d6 points of bleedout damage. If the creature perishes from bleedout, their body is crushed and explodes into a shower of gore. If done against objects or creatures without blood, there is no bleedout but they can crush the object or creature down to two sizes smaller once it hits 0 hp.
If making a Strength check to break an object, they gain a +12 on the Strength check to sunder if they maintain a hold for 3 rounds. With this, they can crush buildings and break through walls.
Devour (Ex): While holding a grappled creature, the putto grotesque can make a bite attack that absorbs the life force of the victim. They heal the same damage they deal with their bite attack, or absorb temporary hp equal to that amount (temporary hp overlaps, it does not stack). They can also consume a dead body as a 1 round action that provokes attacks of opportunity, healing 1 hp per HD of the creature or gaining temp hp if lacking damage.
Far Mind (Ex): While not immune to mind-effects, the mind of a putto grotesque is alien and twisted. Effects which read minds, contact minds, or otherwise expose their thoughts to the world do not function, and cause the source attempting it to make to become confused for 1 round. When under a compulsion effect at their choosing, they have a 50% chance each round that instead of following orders they simply do nothing but babble instead.
Grab (Ex): While a putto grotesque does not have improved grab, they are apt at grabbing creatures smaller than them. Against creatures one size smaller than themselves or smaller, they do not provoke for attacks of opportunity for grapple attempts.
Immunities (Ex): Putto grotesques are immune to blindness, dazzling, disease, fear, poison, polymorphing. They are also immune to electricity.
Laugh (Su): Laughing like small children, putto grotesques invoke fear in those they hunt. They can laugh as a move action, and one creature within 60 ft must make a Will save DC 17 or be immobilized with fear for 1 round. This is a mind-affecting fear effect, and a successful save negates and imparts immunity to further attempts for 1 round. The saving throw is Charisma based.
Lifesight (Ex): Putto grotesques can see living creatures as if they were illuminated by faerie fire. This light pierces all gases and smoke and other barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it. They are blind when in areas devoid of life, but typically local flora or fauna provide enough to a glow to illuminate the terrain, though not other more mobile creatures or objects that do not show up to their lifesight.
Skills: Putto grotesques a +8 racial bonus on Swim checks to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.
