Author Notes[edit]

It playable, I add some more gifts and fluff when I have times. For now this article is deemed playable by the author, I. Oh and please discuss any mechanical change on this page, or anything really. --Dio Magellan 06:45, December 15, 2009 (UTC)

Fly Speed[edit]

What is the Yelkoven's fly speed when aquiring the air subtype? --Franken Kesey 20:04, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

It seems that the author does not habitat this site, therefore would a fly speed of 15' with good maneuverability sound reasonable? --Franken Kesey 20:48, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Comments[edit]

A more detailed portrayal might help me in describing them to other players - a picture might even be better. If you are not an artist deviantart may be a good start. --Franken Kesey 02:59, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Reposting request. --Franken Kesey (talk) 06:10, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
I missed this somehow, thanks for alerting me to it on my talk. No complaints from me, or anyone else in the community it seems. - Tarkisflux Talk 21:56, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Tunneling[edit]

I don't see how a burrow speed, even only a burrow speed of 5, is admissible for a LA 0 race. Burrow allows you to dive under the ground, giving total cover as part of a 5 foot step. I realize this isn't the only LA 0 race on this wiki to give a burrow speed, so maybe I'm missing something and burrow isn't as powerful as I think it is. Either way, I would really appreciate a explanation for how this is appropriate for a first level character. --TheDarkWad (talk) 01:19, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

I can't speak for the race (haven't studied it) but burrowing at 5 ft should be fine. Burrowing is limited by terrain. You can only burrow in loose soil, sand, gravel, and the like. Stone, wood, and most worked or hard materials block it unless said otherwise, so if you're in a city or on a rocky mountain or similar you're out of luck. The stronger form, Earth Glide, permits rock-movement. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 02:31, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm aware that burrow is limited by terrain. The problem is that if you do happen to be in this environment, burrow is practically better than flight (burrow blocks line of effect) and enemies rarely have any counter. In this context, burrow seems to be essentially an "I win" button, especially at level 3, when this race gives 10 foot burrow speed. A situational "I win" button is still an "I win" button and thus pretty bad for balance. Dirt and sand show up frequently enough that in many campaigns it isn't even really situational. --TheDarkWad (talk) 03:03, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
It's a trick that can only be done every other round at best. So the first round you can attack, burrow, and be immune. Then you have to burrow up and attack, and you can't burrow back down. Well, I suppose you could try attacking (once), then using a move action to burrow. But you'll be provoking AoOs for movement as normal if you do. It certainly makes things harder, but I consider it a limited use trick that ends up with people readying actions to find you, or employing movement-halting methods like tripping and grappling, or just moving to fight someone else (your burrow speed often isn't very high to chase them, and you're blind to them moving if you don't have tremorsense). A similar strength trick is Spring Attack with the ability to move in and then out of range.
In terms of strength, one can also look when it's available via spells. Flight comes in at level 5 via Fly. Burrow comes in at level 3. I rank it about the same strength as obtaining spiderclimb. That is, it's a good benefit, but can be appropriate at LA 0 so long as it's one of the main gimmicks of the race. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 03:15, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
(EDIT: On a side note, the race looks badly balanced in the first place though. And it mostly boils down to its oddball scaling of gifts to LA. 3, 8, 18? What in the world? And how complex would it be to play an LA 2 version with 18 racial gimmicks? Less is more man, less is more.) -- Eiji-kun (talk) 03:20, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
