Vespertillum[edit]

A vespertillum is a bat-like creature. They live peaceful lives and cultivate pastry making as one of the most important arts. The are very resistant to diseases.

Personality[edit]

Vespertilli (the plural form of vespertillum) are a scarce people, that lives peaceful lives in small gatherings, enjoing their time with cooking and mapping. They are cordial, although shy and not well known by more large-numbered people.

The daily routine of a typical vespertillum involves a lot of pastry making, with ingredients such as fruits and bugs, both of which are the only food this race eats. Another occupation of theirs, in which they rejoice, is exploration and map making: they use their exceptionally acute senses to help them in travelling, as well as their glide ability.

They are very gluttonous for sweets and pastries, though these are, at least initially, unsavory for other races, as they make cakes and other sweets with fruits and bugs. Instead these two foods are the favourite ones of vespertilli, that make use of them in every recipe, having become quite expert in them.

Physical Description[edit]

Vespertilli have the features of a humanoid bat, such as prominent, flat nose, long ears, furry body and long fingers. Their chest and legs are covered with a fur of a light orange, while the head is black, as the arms are. The membranes that make up their wings are very thin and elastic, semi-transparent in appearance, extremely durable thanks to their elasticity.

They have very short legs, that render them slow on the ground, but they compensate this obstacle with their ability to glide through the air. Their arms, in contrast, are very long, relatively to their body.

Their bodies are elongated but they are lightweight and quite small, as this assists in flight.

Relations[edit]

They are a quiet and reserved race, that loves to cherish life in little things. They are not often well received by races that don't know them, as their aspect is not the most appreciated and their similarity with bats has led at some superstitions being born. But to neighbours they are a nice and warm folk, quite useful in their specialties. They love the company of halflings and gnomes, and various collaborations bring them together with dwarves.

They are also renown for their sweet tooth, that make them famous when travelling through other races.

Alignment[edit]

Mostly neutral, they don't have a defining alignment, but most vespertilli are lawful neutral or neutral good.

Lands[edit]

Most of the life of a vespertilli in spent awake in the night and asleep during the day. Because of this they prefer to settle in caves and underground, especially where they have large space to glide. If not underground, their cities are located in thick forests, preferably at high elevation. If they cannot find cool and shade in nature, they make them, building houses and buildings in such a way to protect themselves from the sun very efficiently, even during the day.

A traveller going through vespertilli's lands will be surprised of discovering that, at night, their cities are very lively and busy, while during the day they would find them quiet and almost unhabitated.

Religion[edit]

As vespertilli concern themselves more with the present than the future, they usually worship deities of pleasure, luck, arts and travel. These are the activities that they care for the most. As far as nature worship goes, they respect the moon and the stars, as they know very well the night sky.

Beside this general spirituality, they worship their racial deity, Shindilla Moonwing.

Language[edit]

Vespertilli preferred to adopt Common as a primary language, as it allows them to speak with most races. They usually learn the languages of the races they interact the most with, such as dwarves, gnomes and halfings.

Their name means: "those who live in the twilight".

Names[edit]

Their names are usually composed by a lot of e and shrill sounds, while typical consonants are b, d, n and s.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • Humanoid (Anthro): They do not gain any weapon proficiency given by their type.
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a vespertillum has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Vespertillum base land speed is 20 feet. Glide speed 40 feet (12 meters)
  • Darkvision: A vespertillum can see in the dark up to 80 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and a vespertillum can function just fine with no light at all.
  • Long Hearing (Ex): +4 to Listen checks. At 8 HDs they gain blindsense out of 30 feet (9 meters).
  • Gliding (Ex): Vespertilli have large membranes of thin flesh. They go from the wrists down to the lower back, leaving a space between their upper arms and sides, similar to an half circle on their back. This allows them to glide with ease, covering 20 feet (6 meters) per 5 feet (1,5 meters) of descent. Treat this glide ability as a fly speed for the purpose of prerequisites. Its maneuverability is average. At 6 HDs it increases to good and at 10 HDs it may cover 40 feet (12 meters) per 5 feet of descent. If a vespertillum becomes unconscious or helpless while in midair, its wings naturally unfurl and powerful ligaments stiffen the wings. The vespertillum descends in a tight corkscrew and takes only 1d6 points of falling damage, no matter what the actual distance of the fall. Even if your maneuverability improves, you can not hover while gliding.
  • Flutter Moonlight: Once per encounter, while under the moonlight, or similar light, a vespertillum may flutter its wings with such strange motions as to daze one enemy within 30 feet (9 meters) that can see it. This costs a move action and may be done as part of gliding. The DC is 10 + 1/2 HD + Dex or Int modifier, with a Will save to resist.
  • Strong Physiology (Ex): +4 to saves against diseases.
  • Light Blindness: Abrupt exposure to bright light (such as sunlight or a daylight spell) blinds vespertilli for 1 round. On subsequent rounds, they are dazzled as long as they remain in the affected area.
  • Pastry Artist: +2 to Craft (cooking) or Profession (cook) checks. Their insatiable appetite for sweets and good food make them very skilled at making them. You must choose to which skill the bonus apply and may never change it.
  • Monstrous Body (Ex): The verspertillum's wings do not permit them to wear normal armor, though existing armor can be altered at +25% its base material cost for light armor, or +50% for medium and heavy armor. As a result, they favor lighter or no armor.
  • +2 to Climb and Jump checks. They have strong legs and arms, that they need to reach high elevation to glide.
  • Automatic Languages: Common
  • Bonus Languages: Dwarf, Halfling, Gnome, Undercommon
  • Favored Class: Chemist or Swashbuckler
  • Level Adjustment: +0
  • Effective Character Level: 1
