Headless Helm

Headless Helm
Price: 6000 gp
Body Slot: Head
Caster Level: 5th
Aura: Faint Necromancy
Activation: -- and Move Action; see text
Weight: --

With a pop, your head comes off and rolls on the ground. Surprisingly this is not as fatal as it should be.

Considered a cursed item by some, the headless helm is a slightly spooky looking helmet which allows the head and body to be split without harm to the user. This renders you immune to the Vorpal effect of vorpal weapons, and you can even remove or add your own head as a move action. If you are struck by a natural 20 (confirmed or not) you must make a Fortitude save equal to the damage taken or have your head fall off from the impact, landing at your feet after the damage is resolved.

When your head is removed, it has an amount of hp equal to the body at the time of removal, and the same maximum hp as you. It has enough mobility to turn in place but is otherwise immobile with a land speed of 0 ft, and is always denied its Dex score. On the other hand, it counts as a creature two sizes smaller. You retain your visual and audio senses as normal, regardless how far away your body is, and you may breath and speak as if your body was connected. The stump is covered in a uniform red glaze preventing bleeding and transporting blood and air between head and body. The headless body is blind and deaf, but otherwise may move on its own. If it is within line of sight of the head, it has its senses but with a 20% concealment chance due to the unusual point of view.

Head and body retain their own hp totals, but otherwise share status effects. The true benefit of this arrangement is that as long as the head or the body is alive, the other cannot die due to hp loss. Instead it goes inert until it rises above -10 hp, or the other part of the body hits -10 hp, killing the creature. The creature may still die from status effects and death effects. When the head and body are re-united, they take the average hp between them to determine their total hp.

You get a +10 on bluff checks to appear dead if your head is removed. The helmet cannot be removed from the head while it is separated. The head always knows the direction, but not the distance, of its body.

Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, gentle repose.
