Arcana Ingenium[edit]

The arcana ingenium comes in many forms but at its core it is a (often self-levitating) sphere of arcane energies and magical materials such as silver, gold, crystal, and glass that take some input and convert it into raw magical energy which may be funneled elsewhere to power all sorts of magical architecture. Some use a reactive fuel suitable for a mundane engine for their task, while others set up panels and antenna that convert ambient magical forces into a store. Even others have a vault which wands and staves can be placed in which it consumes a number of spell levels equal to half its caster level to power itself for 8 hours.

It serves as a battery, lasting for at least 8 hours before needing refueling again for most low-end work. As a general rule, an arcana ingenium can only power a magical object if its own caster level meets or exceeds the needs of the object. For the purpose of converting mundane fuel into magic an amount of fuel needed to perform the task with mundane means is needed, so a flying machine will need the fuel capacity and use of a jet engine of its kind.

Arcana Ingeniums are roughly the size of a beach ball and are often shielded and encased in a larger fixed structure. If set up to absorb ambient magical energies it is even larger, taking up a 10 ft square as if it were a large creature, but does not require an active fuel source. It weighs 500 lbs on its own.

Strong Universal; CL 13th; Craft Wondrous Item, limited wish; Price 8,000 gp.
