Dead Man's Drink[edit]

It is a place to drown the sorrows of the dead. It is a stopping ground for planar adventurers. It is the neutral ground which fiend and celestial relax within.

The Dead Man's Drink is an extraplanar bar floating in the void, serving patrons from all over the outer planes and often acting as a pit stop for travelers in transit from plane to plane. It specifically tailors itself to serving the spirits of the dead within their afterlife, and is host to rumor and story for those with a keen ear.

Planar Traits[edit]

The Dead Man's Drink is a bar with a mostly empty parking lot, a single light, and a billboard floating on a chunk of rock surrounded by dimly illuminated mists giving the impression of moonlight. A single road stretches into a bridge that enters the misty expanse from which travelers normally appear from and may depart from. The interior of the bar seems to defy the exterior in both size and layout, with at least one spot appearing to have an inconsistent number of shadowy corners, a small area for dart games and pool, and menus which appear in the users native language. It has at least two floors, but only the first floor is really used for business purposes.

Creatures move in and out for drinks, but the only constant is The Barkeeper who runs the place, a middle aged, balding, and inconsequential looking average humanoid man who takes overs, makes drinks, and when things get too hot also keeps the peace. This is because The Barkeeper, and indeed every single object in the plane, is part of the Dead Man's Drink itself. The plane is sentient and alive, capable of altering itself at will to meet its demands, and its only desire seems to provide a proper bar experience. The Bartender is merely its avatar and possesses unnatural abilities which it only displays when dismissing an unruly patron. Few things can stand against The Bartender, but in dire times the plane inverts itself, ejecting all occupants into random outer planes and becoming a smoky gray orb floating amidst the Astral Plane until the time it desires to return to function.

It's uncertain if the Dead Man's Drink is the result of some divine prank or is a natural planar creature, but occupants are expected to follow its rules and stay peaceful, no matter who happens to be visiting.

Elemental, Energy, Alignment and Magic Traits[edit]

Planar Connections[edit]

The Dead Man's Drink is only accessible via the Ethereal Plane and the Outer Planes, specifically those associated with the afterlife. Portals into the Dead Man's Drink appear to be hidden amongst a thick bank of fog. Connections are made through certain doors or magical items which lead to the location.

Inhabitants[edit]

The bar is home to many patrons, almost all temporary and almost all composed of petitioners, spirits of the dead, or those caretaking or shepherding the dead. It, like Sigil, is considered a neutral territory for spirits moving through it and those with violent intent risk expulsion by The Bartender, or even the temporary collapse of the plane and ejection into a random outer plane. As such inhabitants are expected to have a basic level of compliance, and the rare bar brawl is done under restrictions and under watchful eyes.

Movement and Combat[edit]

With the same properties as the material plane, there is no difference fighting here or there. However for those on the outside of the bar they risk falling off the edge into the ever-present sphere of mist which surrounds the bar. Those who fall through the mist without intent of leaving are shunted away to a random outer plane.

Features of the Dead Man's Drink[edit]

Due to its ever shifting nature, pinning down exact features is difficult, but there are certain repeating themes which appear often when visiting the bar. The front has a bar top and The Bartender with his many glasses. Behind him, a kitchen from wence food is created and delivered from, and various soda fountains and beer taps are discovered. Elsewhere are tables including a shadowy corner whose geometry appears to be flexible and indistinct. There is also a gaming corner where various bar entertainments can be discovered such as pool. The last major area would be a small stage, rarely used, and the stairwell leading up to the 2nd floor and down. However the path to the basement is always locked, and no one knows for sure what lies below.

The exterior appears largely abandoned except for the presence of a single vehicle which changes its form every so often. It is believed to be The Bartender's car. Likewise, the billboard displays random and often fictional products.

Encounters[edit]

Any outer planar creature, petitioner, or ghost could be found in this area. For the most part encounters are random, but The Bartender is known to keep occasional visitors around for extended periods of time in exchange for jobs. It is not uncommon to find a bouncer at the door who may be a random being from an outer plane, and it is said the upstairs contains a series of rooms for an uncertain number of creatures who are staying for more than a day.

Fighting is usually tolerated outside the bar, so long as collateral is kept to a minimum. Fighting within the bar is likely to get The Bartender to grab you and throw you out the door.

Using the Dead Man's Drink[edit]

For a place smaller and more cozy than Sigil but providing the same function, with a much more friendly but yet overpowering Lady of Pain expy, the Dead Man's Drink is the place to be. It is a fine starting or stopping point for any afterlife adventures. The Barkeeper is not much of a chatter and usually focused on business, but does sometimes spread gossip which can be the start of a grand adventure.
