Dreamstone[edit]

In places of intense psychic energy and within the Plane of Dreams, the thoughts of the unconscious mind gather briefly in solid form not unlike glittering golden grains of dust or sand. These constructs are often temporary, but they can form more stable patinas upon psychically charged objects or certain augmented areas. This is known as dreamsand and by itself it has little to no purpose other than its sparkling appearance, and the patina is easily scraped away. A sort of psychic residue left by dreams, dreamsand converts under the right circumstances to produce a psychically active crystaline material known as dreamstone. Far more useful in this large collective state the talented can forge it into weapons, armor, and items. It appears as golden semi-translucent crystals which glow in the presence of psychic energy. They can rarely be found as stable chunks on the Plane of Dreams, and even more rarely coaxed into being by growing patina on deep crystal and then compressing the resulting sand into crystals.

When forged into weapons, dreamstone converts part of the damage into psychic energy. Half of the weapon damage becomes untyped mind-affecting damage. Shields are considered weapons for this purpose.

When forged into armor it guards the user against mental influence. You gain 1/2 of the base armor bonus as an insight bonus against mind-affecting effects (minimum +0). Users are also immune to the affects of dream and nightmare while wearing this armor.

There are a few unique items which can be forged from dreamstone. If formed into a lamp, it illuminates whenever within 60 ft of a psionic effect as if using detect psionics. If formed into a crystal mount it can be placed at the tip of a rod, staff, wand, or similar stave shaped item as either a normal or an inverted crystal. A normal crystal can touch a sleeping or unconscious being and impart a message upon it as if using dream, once per sleeping target per day. An inverted crystal can instead grant the user an idea of what the creature is dreaming about, if anything. These visions are usually fuzzy and surreal, and unwilling users get a Will save DC 10 + 1/2 HD + the users highest mental ability modifier, save negates. A successful save can have the target choose to wake up from the disruption.

Finally, there is one function for its unforged "dreamsand" state. 50 gp worth of the substance can be used as a sort of material component for mind-affecting psionic powers. They increase the DC of the psionic power by +1, but causes the effect to be ethereal and temporary like that of a dream state. Any damage or attempt to disturb an influenced creature (a standard action) on the influenced target gains another saving throw against the effect.

In theory, dreamsand and dreamstone comes in different, usually metallic, colors based on the nature of their origins as hopes, dreams, fears, nightmares, or other mental effects. However, there is no known difference between them other than hue.

Dreamstone needs special preparation so all weapons and armor made from it are always of masterwork quality; the masterwork cost is included in the prices given below. Thus, dreamstone weapons and ammunition have a +1 enhancement bonus on attack rolls, and the armor check penalty of dreamstone armor is lessened by 1 compared to ordinary armor of its type.

Dreamstone has 10 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 6. It takes half damage from all energy damage except sonic, full damage from bludgeoning and sonic, quarter damage to piercing and slashing, and is immune to acid damage. It can be affected by any psychic or mind-affecting damage as if it was a creature, taking half damage before hardness. It is considered to be crystal or stone.
