The captain was nervous, quietly watching the radar screen. Somewhere out there the hunters were waiting for them to make a noise, and to end their lives at sea.

The Drebbel-1562 Submarine Hunter did not start out as a weapon. It was originally an exploration unit from Scientia for investigating far off worlds with oceans, such as Europa. These autonomous drones would swim around, recording and observing and transmitting the information back to their owners. However, at one point Scientia encountered a dangerous threat deep under the waves, and to prevent the awakening of a great evil they weaponized their exploration machines to stop the disaster in its tracks.

After seeing the effectiveness of the drones as weapons, they were reclassified and turned into AI piloted mini-submarines packed with mines and torpedoes generated by a materials summoning chamber. With superior senses and range, enemy submersibles stand no chance against these silent killers.

The Drebbel-1562 Submarine Hunter is an oval shaped machine with short stubby "wings" and two jet intakes for a water pump jet. A small hole for a "mouth" deploys torpedoes, while a sliding vent on its stomach drops sea mines. Most are blue-gray, like a blue whale, with a vaguely stone-like texture. They are often controlled remotely by boats miles away.

Combat[edit]

The submarine hunter works best as an ambush predator. Able to stand perfectly still and hidden, it seeks out passing enemy submarines and rises to attack. If part of a group, it will send alarm to other submarine hunters in the area to approach while they are panicked with dealing with just one of these things.

Echolocation (Ex): The submarine hunter has blindsense out to 100 ft and blindsight out to 50 ft, but only when underwater. This is considered passive echolocation. As a free action on its turn it can switch to active echolocation, expanding its blindsense range to 1 mile, but generating noise which can be detected by sensitive ears and blindsense or blindsight. A DC 20 Listen check, or having blindsense or blindsight, allows you to detect the direction (but not distance) of active echolocation.

Hardness: The submarine hunter is made of a stone-like composite which absorbs sound and blends in with the environment. It takes full damage from bludgeoning and sonic damage, half damage from acid, cold, force, piercing, and slashing damage, and one-quarter damage from fire attacks. It is immune to electricity.

Programming: The submarine hunter possesses the following programs: Attack, Identify Object, Protect, Reposition, Search, Self-Preservation.

Quiet (Ex): The submarine hunter is very quiet and its body absorbs sound. It has full ranks in Move Silently checks. In addition, it cannot be detected by blindsense, blindsight, and other sound based sensory abilities. This immunity is lost when using active echolocation.

Sea Mine (Su): The submarine hunter can conjure a sea mine, up to 10 per day. Once conjured, the mine exists forever as a mundane item. It drops a small metal sphere which will explode with the damage of a double strength torpedo (26d6 sonic) in a 20 ft burst, with a DC 22 Reflex save for half. The sea mine activates when a creature or vehicle enters within 10 ft of it. It is easily detectable by visual sight, but hard to find by auditory methods. It effectively has a Hide check of DC 20 and a Move Silently check of DC 30.

Torpedo (Su): The submarine hunter can conjure a torpedo at will. Once conjured, the torpedo exists forever as a mundane item. Torpedoes can be launched as a standard action, with a range increment of 50 ft in water. Torpedoes deal 1d6 sonic damage per CR (13d6). If you miss your target by 5 or less, the torpedo explodes nearby the target and they take half damage.

Water Cloaking (Su): The submarine hunter can hide in the water and discourage detection methods. It becomes invisible and silenced, with the appearance of water than an empty bubble in the water. In this state its movement speed is cut in half and it cannot run, and it cannot attack or surface until it drops its cloak as a standard action. This only functions underwater.

Construction[edit]

Drebbel-1562 Submarine Hunters are build out of a composite of many different metals, plastics, and alloys which must be processed in a factory. In addition its computer core requires special components and programming. The cost of the base material components are worth 10,000 gp.

Assembling the body requires a DC 28 Craft (technology) check, a DC 28 Knowledge Engineering, or a DC 28 Knowledge Xeno check.

CL 15th; Craft Construct, control water, lesser geas, silence; Price 100,000 gp; Cost 45,000 gp + 3600 XP.
