Elemental Artificer

The idea of binding an elemental to an item isn’t so strange, after all it is widely used in the creation of the Elemental Airship. However some brilliant minds have extrapolated, correctly, that a smaller elemental could be bound to a suit of armor to provide its wearer with great power. The risk however where great, the suit’s containment system isn’t bottomless which can lead to an overload, or even an elemental escape. But those who succeeded became Elemental Artificer, harnessing elemental powers through their suit.

Class: Kineticist

Level: 1st-20th

Replaces: Armor Proficiency, Class Skill, Key Ability Score, Burn, Elemental Defense, Elemental Overflow, Expanded Elements, Omnikinesis

Benefit: A Elemental Artificer gain the following class features:

Armor Proficiency (Ex): An elemental artificer is proficient with light, medium and heavy armor alongside all shields (except tower shields).

Engineering Training (Ex): A elemental artificer add Disable Device and Knowledge (Engineering) to her class skill, this replaces the normal skills she adds to her class list through her chosen elements and counts as them for the Skilled Kineticist Wild Talent and similar abilities.

A elemental artificer uses her Intelligence modifier instead of her Constitution modifier to determine her damage with wild talents, the DCs of Constitution-based wild talents, the durations of wild talents with Constitution-based durations, her bonus on concentration checks for wild talents, and any other Constitution-based effects of all her wild talents.

This alters the kineticist’s class skills and the key ability score of wild talents.

Elemental Power Suit (Ex): An elemental artificer channels her elemental power, not through herself but through a special suit of armor. She may only choose the Air, Earth, Fire or Water elements, binding an elemental of the appropriate type to her armor. Creating an elemental power suit requires imbuing an existing suit of medium or heavy armor with elemental energy. The process takes 8 hours and the binding of a small elemental, which is included in the process and does not require further effort on the kineticist’s part.

The imbued armor retains all of its mundane and magical qualities, but can also be used to channel elemental energy. An elemental artificer cannot use any of her supernatural or spell-like kineticist talent, including her blast and elemental defense if she is not wearing her elemental power suit. An elemental artificer cannot have more than one existing elemental power suit at any time, if she imbues another the previously imbued suit becomes inert.

If an elemental power suit is destroyed or gains the broken condition, it releases a small elemental of the appropriate type for the kineticist's element. A broken elemental power cannot be used to channel elemental energy until repaired. At 7th level when her suit is broken or destroyed it releases a large elemental instead of a small one. At 15th when broken or destroyed an elder elemental is released instead.

Finally an elemental power suit gain a special ability based on the kineticist’s primary element:

  • Air: The kineticist may don her Elemental Power Suit as a move action without assistance. If she gains a fly speed it is not reduced by wearing heavy armor and she treats her armor check penalty as 0 when making a fly check.
  • Earth: If the kineticist is wearing armor whose material provides DR/- she may add that Damage Reduction to the one provided by elemental defense and treat the combined Damage Reduction as DR/-.
  • Fire: The kineticist counts her class level as 2 levels higher for the purpose of picking the Flame JetOA utility wild talent and 4 levels higher for picking the Greater Flame JetOA utility wild talent.
  • Water: The kineticist increases the burn she can safely store from her containment system (see below) by 1.

Containment System (Ex): An elemental artificer does not bear the burn she incurs upon herself, instead containing it in her elemental power armor. An elemental artificer does not suffer any physical negative effect of having burn. However the containment system of her suit has its limits, it can safely store 2 points of burn + 1 burn per 5 kineticist level. At the end of her turn, if her current burn is above that limit her armor overload, consuming her in elemental power. This deals 1 point of damage per hit dice she has plus an additional 1 point of damage per hit dice for each point of excess burn she had over her armor's limit. The damage type is the same as the elemental artificer’s kineticist blast damage except it ignores resistance and immunities the wearer may have and cannot be healed until the elemental artificer next rest to reset her burn. The process leaves the elemental artificer dazed for 1 round and staggered for 1 round per excess burn she had, and reset her burn to her armor's safety limit -1.

If the damage is enough to reduce the kineticist to 0 hit point or blow, the elemental power suit gains the broken condition. The burn contained in the suit behaves as normal otherwise.

This ability alters burn.

Elemental Matrix (Ex): When a Elemental Artificer gain her Elemental Defense at 2nd level she cannot take burn to improve it. At 4th level she is as though she accepted 1 burn when determining the effect of her elemental defense. At 8th level, and every 4 levels thereafter, she is treated as having accepted an additional burn in her elemental defense.

This ability alters elemental defense.

Targeting System (Ex): At 3rd level, an elemental artificer gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls and damage rolls with her kinetic blasts. The damage bonus doesn’t apply to kinetic blade, kinetic whip, or other infusions that don’t apply the damage bonus from elemental overflow.

This bonus increases by 1 at 6th level and every 3 levels thereafter.

This ability replaces elemental overflow.

Limited Scope (Ex): At 7th and 15th, an elemental artificer can only choose to improve her primary element with her Expanded Element class feature.

This ability alters Expanded Element.

Elemental Cycling System (Ex): At 20th level, the elemental artificer’s containment system has been fine-tuned to a zenith. The constant cycling of elemental power reduces the amount of burn stored in her containment system by 1 every hour.

This abilitiy replaces Omnikinesis.

Variant: Aetheric/Gravitic Artificer

This archetype variant allows the Elemental Artificer to be used alongside the Aether and Void elements. This function much the same way as the Elemental Artificer, except that the suit is the result of scientific progress rather than binding an elemental into an energy source. When broken or destroyed, the suit does not release an elemental, instead dealing the wearer's kineticist blast damage to all adjacent creatures. The wearer is spared from the damage, but all other creatures must make a Reflex save the same DC as a form infusion, taking half damage on a successful save.

The Aetheric Artificer gains the same benefits as the air element as her elemental power suit bonus. The Gravitic Artificer gain the same benefits as the fire element except for Gravity ControlOA and Greater Gravity ControlOA instead of Flame JetOA and Greater Flame JetOA respectively.
