Garuja[edit]

You are not a friend of justice... then you are the enemy!
—Supanna the Golden, Battle of Justice, book 3:14.

In ancient times it is said there was a war between two gods and their followers. One was a serpent god of water and the dead who turned their followers into vile serpents, and the other was a bird god of wind and courage, who transformed his followers into glorious eagle men to do battle with their enemy. So began a great war, and when the conflict finally reached its end the survivors would pass into myth and legend. Yet these powerful divine beings seem to have reproduced, and now their less powerful kin roam the earth as feathered winged humanoids known as the garuja.

Description[edit]

Garujas are humanoids whose hair is replaced by feathers, with a thin coat of down on their body and thicker longer feathers on their head, with bird-like talons for feet and hands and a set of wide colorful wings. They come in many colors, not all natural, but always saturated and colorful. Even though they resemble humanoids to a point (such as a lack of beak) they are avian in nature and much lighter than they appear. The species is naturally strong in body, and strong in will, but they remain a shy shadow of the divinely augmented warriors from their long forgotten religious conflict.

They tend to dress decoratively, with a need to remain nimble and great confidence in their self being. They stand between 5 and 6 ft tall, but they look much larger when their wings are at full spread.

Garuja Psychology[edit]

Garujas are confident, brave, courageous, and have a strong sense of justice. Perhaps too strong, for to some they come off as arrogant, bullish, prone to violence, and dense. Because of their belief in their divine origins, some believe that makes them more important than most. They believe they can fix the world, but have little patience for forethought on how to achieve that. Many become knights, paladins, and others who might achieve a sense of heroism.

They see crawling creatures with some concern, as the memory of an ancient battle between avian and serpent runs deep in their blood.

Territories[edit]

Garujas make monasteries on tall mountains, massive trees, and other places of great height where they can benefit from safety from anyone who cannot fly. However few garujas stay there for long. Their heart beats with wanderlust, and they are encouraged to seek out evil so they know what to look out for in the future, for there is no teacher like experience. This has resulted in a troublingly low average life span for the species, even though the ones that survive are fairly long lived.

Garuja Adventurers[edit]

Adventure calls for the garuja, and when the world is soaked in evil the garuja appear to make right what once went wrong. Adventuring is natural to them.

Garuja Names[edit]

Nagara names tend to some off as Sanskirt inspired, or of a loud and shouting nature.
