A simple wooden staff, a close look at the surface reveals the wood grain itself is curled in arcane patterns. They are commonly topped with a pretty but pointless crystal.
A base staff is a staff which does not initially have any spells upon it (and thus is more akin to a rod), though spells may be applied to it as normal through crafting feats. Initially acting as a masterwork quarterstaff, it provides the following additional benefits.
- Careful Casting: If you cast defensively while using this staff and fail, you simply fail to cast and do not lose the spell.
- Detecting Light: When you cast a detect spell with this staff as an optional focus, you may project the spell out as a silvery pale light from the staff itself. The resulting illumination of what is being detected is visible for anyone to see.
- Empower Arcana: As a standard action you may expend one of your 1st level or higher spell slots or spells per day and light the staff up in brilliant blue. While enhanced, spells cast through your staff have their caster level increased by 1. This lasts for a number of subsequent rounds equal to 4 + the level of the spell expended.
- Parlor Tricks: You may employ the use of prestidigitation at will with a duration of concentration, and it includes simple and obvious illusions, sparks of light, and other minor effects. This is a supernatural ability.
This staff is a favorite of sorcerers and wizards.
