Mineralscale Dragon[edit]

A minor dragon devoid of scales naturally, they can devour minerals in the environment to provide themselves some form of protection. True dragons mock them as mutants and cripples, which the mineralscale dragons resent to no end, for the blood of true dragons flows in their veins as well.

Personality[edit]

Mineralscale dragons live a life of resentment and self-esteem issues. Being born without scales is like being born without limbs among dragon, leaving them to a life "crippled". Many dragons mock these aberrant, while others give pity but no confidence. Worse, they lack the age categories of true dragons, even if they are counted among the true dragons, and only get weaker with age. As a result, many mineralscale dragons have become surly.

Combined with a dragon's natural greed and fickleness, and many find interactions difficult. However, when a mineralscale dragon feels it is respected its hard exterior softens and they are found to be quite pleasant and emotional creatures.

Physical Description[edit]

Mineralscale dragons are medium sized dragons with smooth hairless bodies. Where scales should be are only the faint imprint of what scales they should have, leaving soft exposed white, pink, tan, gray, and black skin exposed underneath. Their eyes come in many colors, and their headdress of horns vary from breed to breed. They usually never grow beyond medium size, but rumor has it there are paragons of their kind which have moved beyond.

Relations[edit]

Mineralscale dragons are surly beings which covet mineral veins and mines for their own protection and sustenance. As a result, many view mineralscale dragons in a poor light. Dragons, even more so.

Alignment[edit]

Mineralscale dragons often have to survive on their own in a hostile world, pushing them towards chaos and non-good. Unlike most dragons, they are less locked in their behavior and so vary as the situation fits.

Lands[edit]

Mineralscale dragons are solitary dragons which inhabit mines and places where metal and stone is easily found.

Religion[edit]

Mineralscale dragons are dragons! Do you expect them to bow to another being? Nonsense.

Language[edit]

Mineralscale dragons speak Draconic, as well as Common as a necessity of needing to deal with non-dragons often.

Names[edit]

Mineralscale dragons enjoy the names of complex and pretty sounding minerals and jewels.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • +2 Strength or +2 Charisma, -2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution: Dragons are tough, but not often nimble. Many are strong, and many are terrifying as well.
  • Dragon: Though they lack proper scales and are looked down on others, they are still proper dragons.
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a mineralscale dragon has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Mineralscale Dragon base land speed is 30 ft feet.
  • Darkvision: A mineralscale dragon can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and a mineralscale dragon can function just fine with no light at all.
  • Low-Light Vision: A mineralscale dragon can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. She retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
  • Feral Strikes (Ex): The mineralscale dragon gains a feral strike bite attack dealing 1d8 damage with 20/x3 critical, and two feral strike claws dealing 1d6 damage with 19-20/x2 critical.
  • Immunities (Ex): The mineralscale dragon is immune to sleep and paralysis.
  • Mineral Scales (Ex): Mineralscale dragons can eat pretty much any mineral, metal, or stone and gain sustenance from it, as their saliva slowly softens the material down until it can be chewed. Beyond filling their belly, they may choose to incorporate it into their bodies and grow temporary but effective scales made of the material. They gain an armor bonus equal to 3 + 1/2 their HD. The armor counts as non-armor or as light armor (AC 4 and below), medium armor (AC 5 to 7), or heavy armor (AC 8 and above) when beneficial. It has no maximum dexterity, arcane spell failure, or armor check penalty. The body can be enhanced as if it were normal armor, and it applies to any scales produces by this method. The scales last for 24 hours before shedding off. If the mineralscale dragon eats unusual and exotic materials such as adamantine, the scales obtains the traits of armor made out of the substance. The cost for this is 10% of the cost for a full set of armor of its kind, so 500 gp for light adamantine armor and 1500 gp for heavy adamantine armor. For the purposes of this ability common iron is "free", requiring only a steady source of the metal.
  • Monstrous Form (Ex): The mineralscale dragon is not of human form, and armor costs treat them as a non-humanoid creature. In addition while their claws can hold items, they cannot wield weapons properly and take a -4 penalty for improvised use (and an additional -4 penalty if an improvised weapon).
  • Stability (Ex): As a quadruped, the mineralscale dragon gains a +4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground).
  • Wings (Ex): A mineralscale dragon has wings, but they start out very weak. At first they can only be used to glide at a speed of 30 ft (poor maneuverability), dropping 5 ft for every 15 ft they travel. At 3 HD, they gain a fly speed of 30 ft (poor maneuverability), but can only fly up to their Con modifier rounds at a time (minimum 1), and must rest twice as long as they flew before attempting to fly again. At 6 HD, they gain a fly speed of 30 ft. At 9 HD, their fly speed increases to average maneuverability. At 12 HD, their fly speed increases to 60 ft a round.
