Cooking Spirit | Minestrani gain a racial bonus to Craft (cooking) checks equal to their HDs. They also treat this skill as Craft Cooking for any purpose. They have a +4 on save against ingested poisons. Lastly, they can use Flavors as war cook of level equal to their HDs. They apply these effects only on magical food they produced, either because magic in nature or because magically created (except for the cook spell). Treat appetizer and Estanna's stew as a snack, while heroes' feast counts as an entrée. |
Fire Resistance | They are also mildly resistant to flames, having 5 fire resistance. |
Hover | Minestrani may hover in their bowl and they can also raise up to their hover speed. This usually allows them to move inside kitchens. |
Lucky | These feys add their Charisma modifier to AC as luck bonus. |
Strategies and Tactics[edit]
Minestrani hate confrontations, and usually try to defuse hostilities, often offering food and service, or escape with every mean possible, usually they hide and flee unnoticed, but they may use their spell-like abilities to confuse their aggressors and escape.
When forced to fight, they attack at range, using their spoon to hurl spoonfuls of soup, or, less likely, use their spoon or bowls to attack (though they are wary of it, as it's very precious to them and also provides a shield bonus to AC).
Ecology[edit]
Environment:
They live in tidy and neat kitchens, usually wherever their help is needed and the people of the house are nice to them. Finding one outside a kitchen is almost impossible and scholars believe that they simply appear where the conditions are right.
Typical Physical Characteristics:
They appear as purple soup, with some pasta in the form of stars, within a bowl, with a semi-humanoid torso rising up from the middle. A large tuft-like mass of soup is present on their head. They wield a wooden spoon, used for cooking, combat and movement (as they use it as a pivot to move). Their ceramic bowl is colored, usually brigthly, and they are fond of changing it with another more precious. Larger groups of them sometimes reside in bowls all equal in aspect.
Alignment:
Any, but usually neutral.
Lore[edit]
Minestrano is a small house fey, usually inhabiting the kitchen, as its purpose is to cook and help caring people in culinary works. As all feys they are both helpful and mischievious: they are eager to help whoever they like, those that provide for them and respect them, while are prone to prank and annoy houses that don't, before leaving for another household. They are usually very appreciated, as the help of even just one is a great assistance for overworked chefs and cooks. Sometimes they even choose to live in taverns and other bigger establishments, or even at courts, where they are usually present in larger numbers.
It is said that you can attract a minestrano to your house if you have a tidy kitchen and leave a masterwork bowl on the counter during the night. If nobody goes into the kitchen during this time, a minestrano could appear inside it. It is also said, that if you manage to cover the bowl with a matching ceramic lid, without the minestrano noticing, you bind it to your kitchen, forcing it to serve you for a year. Minestrani treated this way usually flee afterwards and spread the word to others.
Society[edit]
Minestrani are not hostile towards each other, but they usually stay alone, no more than one for kitchen. However, in larger environments, they congregate together, acting as friends.
Sample Lair[edit]
They are almost exclusively found in kitchens.
Typical Treasure[edit]
They usually don't bring any items along, hoping to find spices and ingredients in the kitchens they visit. Adventurers can retrieve, when they slain them, their spoon (although they are just wooden spoons) and the bowl. This bowl acts as a pudding pot, except that it's a bowl for one and produces a creamy soup.
Familiar[edit]
Some spellcasters take minestrani as familiars. They need a caster leve of at least 5th and the Improved FamiliarCS feat. Familiar minestrani give a +4 on saves against ingested poison and stomach problems to their master.
