Dread Necromancer

An adaptation of the lovely Dread Necromancer from heroes of horror? To the Pathfinder System. This variant removes the infinite healing exploit present in the 3.5e class and ‘modernizes’ several of the abilities to be in-line with pathfinder classes. Some new abilities were added, as many features were cut or consolidated.

Class: Dread Necromancer

Level: 1st-20th

Replaces: Charnel Touch, Rebuke Undead, Negative Energy Burst, Lich Body, Fear Aura, Negative Energy Resistance, Scabrous Touch, Light Fortification, Enervating Touch, Craft Wondrous Item, Lich Transformation

Benefit: A pathfinder adaptation of the dread necromancer receives the following changes, all other class features are unchanged:

Hit Dice: d8
Skill Points: 2 + Int
Class Skills: Bluff (Cha), Craft (Int), (Int), Disguise (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (arcana) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Linguistic (Int), Profession (Wis), Spellcraft (Int) and Stealth (Dex).

Charnel Touch (Su): A dread necromancer is capable of channeling destructive energy through her hand. As a standard action, she may deal 1d8 point of damage to a living creature she touches. This damage increases by 1 at 2nd level and each 2 levels thereafter. This ability may be used at-will.

A dread necromancer can use the spectral hand spell or her familiar to deliver this attack from a distance.

Cantrips: Dread Necromancers learn a number of cantrips, or 0-level spells, as noted. These spells are treated like any other spell, but they are not expended when cast and may be used again. The dread necromancer list of cantrips is as follow: bleed, detect magic, disrupt undead, grave words, touch of fatigue

Negative Energy Burst (Ex): A dread necromancer can channel negative energy like a cleric, using her class level as her effective cleric level when determining the amount of damage dealt (or healed to undead) and the DC. The dread necromancer can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 1 + her Charisma modifier. Furthermore, she gains Command Undead as a bonus feat.

Adept Necromancer: A 2nd level dread necromancer starts the game with the Spell Focus (Necromancy) feat as a bonus feat. If she already had it, she may select another feat she meets the prerequisites for from her bonus feat list (see below). Additionally when the dread necromancer casts necromancy spells, she may ignore material component worth 25 gp or less.

Necromantic Bond: A 3rd level dread necromancer is able to make a bond with a bonded object, a familiar or a corpse companion. This otherwise works as a arcane bloodline sorcerer's arcane bond class feature.

Undead Aspect: Starting at 3rd level, a dread necromancer can assume an aspect of undeath or otherwise reinforce her necromancy. At 6th level and each 3 levels afterward she may choose an additional undead aspect.

Aura of Fear (Su): A dread necromancer with this aspect is capable of radiating aa 5-foot-radius fear aura as a free action. Opponents in the area must succeed on a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 her class level + her Cha modifier) or become shaken for as long as they stay in the aura and for 1 round thereafter. The shaken effect of the dread necromancer's aura of fear does not stack to become frightened. A creature who successfully saves cannot be affected by that dread necromancer's fear aura for 24 hours

Bone Mage: The dread necromancer adds bone fist, bone spear, boneshaker, boneshatter, defending bone and wall of bone to her dead necromancer spell list at the same level they appear on the sorcerer/wizard spell list. If she had selected one or both of those spells with her advanced learning class feature, she may select different spells of the same level. Furthermore she may use fabricate as a spell-like ability at-will, but only to shape bone.

Death Knight's Armor (Ex): A dread necromancer must have the arcane bond class feature in order to select this undead aspect and must have chosen an armor. The dread necromancer is automatically proficient in the chosen armor and may cast dread necromancer spells in it without suffering from arcane spell failure. Additionally while in her bonded armor, the dread necromancer automatically stabilizes when dying.

Ghostly Shrouds (Su): The dread necromancer is able to summon shrouds of ectoplasms. This grants her a +2 deflection bonus to AC, and her armor benefits as per the ghost touch special ability. At 7th level and each 4 levels thereafter, her deflection bonus increases by +1.

Mummification (Ex): Upon selecting this aspect, the dread necromancer constantly gains the benefits of a Light Fortification armor. She may select this aspect two additional times, increasing to moderate and heavy fortification respectively.

Lich’s Havoc (Ex): When the dread necromancer channel energy to damage living creature, cast damaging spells or spell-like abilities, she deals 1 additional damage per class level.

Undead Graft (Ex): The dread necromancer grafts a terrible undead arm to herself. She gains a +2 inherent bonus to her Strength. This bonus increases to +4 at 13th level, and to +6 at 17th level. Additionally, her charnel touch is empowered, dealing an additional damage per dice rolled. Additionally she increases the DC of her necrotic touches by 1. A dread necromancer must be 9th level to select this undead aspect.

Undead Persistence (Ex): Upon selecting this aspect, the dread necromancer gains the Ferocity special quality and she may use her Charisma to determine the negative hit points she must be at to die instead of her Constitution. If the dread necromancer would be destroyed at 0 hit point, instead she may persists at negative hit points. If the dread necromancer has the Diehard feat, then she is no longer staggered and does not lose hit points while at negative hit points.

Unliving Flesh (Ex): The dread necromancer gains damage reduction 2/bludgeoning. This bonus increases to DR 4 at 7th level, DR 6 at 11th, DR 8 at 15th level and DR 10 at 19th level.

Zombie's Grasp (Ex): The dread necromancer gain Improved Grapple as a bonus feat and she may use her class level rather than her BAB to determine her combat maneuver bonus and combat maneuver defense for the purpose of grappling.

Bonus Feat (Ex): At 5th level and each 5 levels thereafter, a dread necromancer gain a feat from the following list of bonus feat. She must meet the prerequisites for those feats as normal: Extra Channel, Charnel Soldiers, Greater Spell Focus (Necromancy), Improved Channel, Skill Focus (Know. Religion), Thanatopic Spell, or Undead Master

Advanced Learning (Ex): At 4th level, a dread necromancer can add a new spell to her list, representing the result of personal study and experimentation. The spell must be a cleric or wizard spell of the necromancy school, and of a level no higher than that of the highest-level spell the dread necromancer already knows. Once a new spell is selected, it is added to that dread necromancer's spell list and can be cast just like any other spell she knows. If a spell is both a cleric spell and a wizard spell, use the lower of the two spell levels (when different) to determine what level the spell is for a dread necromancer.

A dread necromancer gains an additional new spell at 7th, 10th, 13th,, 16th and 19th level.

Necrotic Touch (Su): Starting at 6th level, the dread necromancer becomes able to channel necromantic energy through her charnel touch. An imbued touch deals 1d8 damage, plus an additional 1d8 per two class level beyond 1st level. Any foe struck by the imbued touch suffer from the effect of the chosen necrotic touch. A Fortitude save with a DC 10 + ½ class level + the dread necromancer Charisma bonus negates the special effect of necrotic touch (unless noted otherwise). A dread necromancer may use this ability three times per day, plus an additional time per day day at 12th and 18th level.

At 6th level, the dread necromancer chooses one of the following touches. At 10th level and each 4 levels thereafter, she may choose an additional touch.

Death’s Touch: The imbued charnel touch deals additional damage equal to your Charisma bonus and the target become staggered for 1 round on a failed save. If the target is slain by the charnel touch, it gains the zombified condition and is under the caster’s control. The target has 1 hit point per class level, and is automatically destroyed after 1 round per class level.

Horrible Touch: The target must make a Fortitude save or become nauseated for 1 round, and the sickened for 1 round per 2 class level.
