|Quick Squeeze. The skitter can move through openings 1/4 inch wide without squeezing, and even smaller openings if squeezing.|
Skitters appear to be a spherical creature about 1 inch in diameter, covered with 1 inch spiky hair. This "hair" is actually tentacles that both allow it move by rolling and squeezing through smaller openings, and to feed. They come in a variety of colors: rust reds, browns, and grays.
Skitters live on bacteria, carrion, mold, decayed plants, and animal waste. They are a food source for many creatures when their preferred food is unavailable. Skitters avoid bright light when possible, as it makes them easier prey.
Fortunately, skitters reproduce at a substantial rate. When a skitter has consumed enough food, it will burst producing 2-5 smaller skitters.
Skitters are generally harmless and solitary, but if their numbers are not controlled, overpopulation will cause a change in skitters. At this time they will form a dangerous Template:5ed.
Skitter and skitter swarm are a recreation of a creature I designed for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in the late 70's. It was designed to explain how medium and larger creatures could survive in a dungeon with limited logistics to support them.
