Yajin[edit]

Short but strong humans who spawned from a line of monkeys (rather than apes), and thus still possess a tail and smaller stature.

Personality[edit]

Yajin are considered somewhat unstable, as they are quick to action and eager for a fight. Their complete lack of personal self regard makes them strong, but also dangerous to themselves and others. Their warlike mindset often brought them into conflict with themselves and others.

Physical Description[edit]

Yajin are small but surprisingly muscular and toned humanoids, almost dwarf height but not quite as stocky, yet bigger and tougher than gnomes. They appear human, if not for a perchance for body hair and the presence of a furry mobile monkey tail. Most have dark colored hair.

Relations[edit]

Humans were not exactly peaceful creatures, but compared to the monkey-borne yajin they were hippies. Yajin were born of war: war against other animals. War against nature. And war against themselves. It meant their civilization stagnated often, and by the time they began to organize they were still vicious barbarians while other species were undergoing enlightenment. It was other species which originally took them outside of their micronations and city states, showed them technology, showed them progress, and were awarded with destruction.

Needless to say, the yajin did not become popular with the world. Even as their civilization did eventually open up and civilize, it was always tainted with the stink of chaos and war, and saddled with ideas of might makes right and honor built on blood. Thus yajin share a niche similar to orcs, the one species they may consistently agree with, and consistently fight with, for what better opponent do they have than a fellow powerful species?

Alignment[edit]

Born from wild spirits, the yajin are usually chaotic or lawful evil, as brutality is the only law they understand.

Lands[edit]

Yajin came from ancient jungles that was demolished by their own wars and growth, as well as climate changes. Now they live within the barren rocky canyons and small forests that dot the landscape.

Religion[edit]

Yajin religion largely consists of uncaring or hostile gods who were actively hunted and slain by the yajin, for there are few better than they. What gods they worship beyond are considered yajin ascended to divinity for their takes of heroism, bloodshed, and might. Many view them collectively as manifesting the concepts of the God of Destruction, the God of Determination, the God of Revolutions, and the God of Rulership as being the most important, and these gods serve as both benevolent deities and terrible devils as their myths see fit.

Language[edit]

Yajin speak Common, a skill taken from other species originally.

Names[edit]

Yajin have various names, but many say they sound vaguely orcish, indicating some cultural exchange occurred between the species at some point.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • +2 Strength or +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence: Tough, strong or nimble, but not as cunning as their ape kin.
  • Humanoid: Yajin are mostly humanoid, ranging from less stocky dwarves down to unusually buff gnomes.
  • Small: As a Small creature, a yajin gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a –4 size penalty on special attack (bull rushes, grapples, overruns, and trips) checks, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but it uses smaller weapons than humans use, and its lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character.
  • Yajin base land speed is 30 feet. Climb 15 ft
  • Little Brute (Ex): Though not large enough to act as if using Powerful Build, yajin are muscularly dense enough to hit above their weight class. They count as a creature one size larger for opposed Strength checks and carrying capacity, but no other purpose.
  • Prehensile Tail (Ex): Yajin tails are so flexible, they can hold (but not wield) items as if they were hands. Any tasks done with the tail without hand support are done at a -2 penalty. On the flipside, the tail provides a +4 bonus to Balance checks and on checks to avoid falling prone.
  • Skills: Yajin have a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks. A yajin can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened, and may Run while climbing. A yajin may use its Dexterity modifier instead of its Strength modifier for Climb checks.
  • Struggle (Ex): A trapped yajin is a dangerous yajin. If grappled, swallowed, engulfed, or trapped in physical restraints they can choose to deal 1d6 + their Strength modifier in damage to the creature or object in direct contact with them as a free action once per round at the start of their turn. In return, they take 1d6 nonlethal damage as backlash each round they use it. There is no attack roll, but struggling prevents them from using any ability which requires Concentration or somatic components.
