Ysmir, Scholar of the Forbidden[edit]

Ysmir was an immortal scholar obsessed with the secret of life itself and later the secrets of The Source. His plot to bypass the final frontier led him to a fate worse than death, his knowledge passed on and became a vestige.

Level: 8th

Binding DC: 28

Special Requirement: Yes

Legend[edit]

Ysmir was once a mortal scholar and truenamer who sought the secret of life; his many experiments were brutal and immoral, and left countless people dead and even more mutated into horrible beasts. After he found no answer in his experiments, he turned toward the far reaches of the multiverse. During his search, Ysmir came upon the Promethean Wall, a massive wall of gnarled roots at the edge of the Cosmos. The wall was said to be guarding The Source, an incredible primeval energy said to be the beginning of all things. While there was no way to pass through the wall without getting caught on it, Ysmir attempted to find a way to contact or study The Source through another method.

After centuries of study and work, he on a long-abandoned world constructed a massive antenna that would allow him to project his consciousness beyond the wall. His plan failed, as Ysmir failed to transcend the wall, and instead his very spirit was annihilated.

What now remains of Ysmir is a decrepit vestige, perhaps a testament that those who seek to acquire the power of The Source for themselves are simply dooming themselves.

Special Summoning[edit]

The binder must have at least 13 ranks in truespeak.

Manifestation[edit]

Yismiry appears as a decrepit twisted being who barely resembles a man; only his head remains, but it is swelled to giant proportions, his features are so twisted they are utterly inhuman. His head is covered in gnarled roots which seem to tear apart his skin.

Sign[edit]

The binder becomes covered in gnarled roots which seem to constrict him enough to cause discomfort.

Influence[edit]

The binder becomes obsessed with learning about the secrets of life — its purpose, how to extend it, how to end it. The binder loses all empathy and starts regarding others either as tools to be used and discarded in the search for knowledge, or obstacles which need to be cut down. Most of all, the binder becomes obsessed with The Source itself.

Granted Abilities[edit]

Lost Powers[edit]

As a standard action, the binder may let loose a bolt of white pinking energy, dealing 1d6 typeless damage per binder level, as a ranged touch attack within close range. Creatures reduced to 0 hit points or below by this attack are reduced to ashes as per the disintegrate spell.

Alternatively, the binder may transform any creature brought below 0 hit points by this blast into a creature of the aberration type whose CR is at least 2 lower than the original creature. The creature spawns at full hit points, does not share memories or personality with its former self, and has no allegiance toward the binder. The effect is instantaneous, but can be reversed by a limited wish or stronger effect.

Magical Experiment[edit]

The binder shares Ysmir's mastery at experimenting on himself and others. As a 1 round action, the binder may replicate the effect of evince lineage; the subject of the spell takes 6 points of constitution burn when the duration ends.

Alternatively, once per binding, the binder may replicate the effect of create life; doing so deals 6 points of constitution burn to the binder (or wisdom burn if the binder does not have a constitution score).

Scholar of the Forbidden[edit]

The binder adds half his binder level as an insight bonus on all knowledge checks. He also gains the ability to use Commune with Elder Spirits as a supernatural ability at will, although he must still provide the material component.

Truenaming[edit]

Upon binding Ysmir, Scholar of the Forbidden, the binder must choose one utterance of 5th level or lower, two of 4th level or lower, and two of 3rd level or lower. She may use these utterances as a truenamer of her binder level. Once you have used this ability, you cannot do so again for 5 rounds.

Vaescian Ritual[edit]

While binding Ysmir, Scholar of the Forbidden, the binder becomes immune to any effect which would unwillingly entrap or move his body or soul (such as imprisonment, magic jar, maze, trap the soul). This does not protect against effects created by Greater Deities or stronger powers.
