Baz-Tien the Eternal Sleeper[edit]

The monk Baz-Tien sought enlightenment through dreams, but encountered a rather infectious, insidious dream from beyond the pale and never awoke again.

Level: 4th

Binding DC: 21

Special Requirement: Yes

Legend[edit]

The Ta-Mei clan of monks sought enlightenment and perfection in their minds and bodies, as monks were wont to do. One among them was the great Baz-Tien, a monk who stood out among her kin. While some sought enlightenment through balance, through fasting, through psionics, and through religion, Baz-Tien postulated enlightenment could only be reached through sleep and dreams. To her detractors, she was known as the laziest monk, but to others, she brought strange visions and philosophical musings.

In her frequent naps, said to happen at any time spontaneously for abnormally long periods, Baz-Tien did find something. Beyond the Dreaming Dark and the whims of the Quori, past the Plane of Leng, and further into the Dreamlands than ever before, her spirit drifted and found... something... coming the other way. Her interaction with this dream spirit took so long, the Ta-Mei monks assumed her dead. It was to her fortune she awoke just as they were lowering her into the ground, eyes wide and awake with the strange tales of a world of loud noises and grinding, of strange white creatures which were blind yet still saw, leaves which hung frozen in time, eldritch rodent-like creatures that were hollow and always waiting, always watching, and other mysteries both wondrous and horrible. And of course, the indescribable being from another world, another dreamwalker from a place far off who told her so many strange and amazing things about the world and the future. Divulging the knowledge from this being proved fruitful, for the great Baz-Tien began to predict the future, create strange and impossible machines, and create miracles.

And so Baz-Tien delved into slumber again, deeper than before, determined to find her unusual benefactor. Each time she went, she would wake up later and later but full of new knowledge that was beneficial but distinctly alien. During her hibernations, her body seemed to cease aging, cease hungering, and some say even cease living, with no ill effect when she returned. And each time the slumbers took longer and longer.

The final slumber she did not awake from. It is not known what she was seeking for, but it was known that shortly after, the Ta-Mei clan and its surrounding people were all found as lifeless bodies, their brains missing from their unopened skulls, and all its strange alien technology missing. As was Baz-Tien.

Special summoning[edit]

The binder must be a race which sleeps.

Manifestation[edit]

You must trance, becoming drowsy and tired as you sit or lay in front of the sign. As your vision blurs, the image of a gaunt pale woman with long hair appears before you, offering her hand. "Come. I have such sights to show you." she offers. If you accept, you feel your spirit depart from your body as she takes you into the cloying mists of the dream, before waking up with a start back in your body and with a dull ache in your head.

Sign[edit]

The binder enters a trace-like state not unlike sleepwalking, and your eyes remain closed. In spite of this, you can choose to see normally and treat yourself as having your eyes open.

Influence[edit]

You gain the effects of the Narcolepsy flaw. If you already have the flaw, roll twice and take the worst result.

If offered the opportunity to rest, you desire to do so when possible. Any natural sleeping you do is extended by 50% longer duration, or until the pact ends.

Granted Abilities[edit]

Distracted[edit]

You drift off easily. You automatically are treated as averting your gaze to gaze attacks, patterns, and other visual effects without the penalties. If you do avert your gaze you are immune to gaze attacks, patterns, and other visual effects while only suffering a 20% miss chance.

However, you are more easily fascinated, taking a -4 penalty on saves against fascination.

Dreamer[edit]

You are half asleep at all times, and your dreams are brief impermanent things. Whenever afflicted by a mind-affecting effect, you may make a saving throw each round to end the duration early. If there was no save, you instead get a Will save of 10 + spell level + appropriate ability modifier, or 10 + 1/2 HD + appropriate ability modifier for supernatural and extraordinary effects.

Just A Quick Nap[edit]

As a free action on your turn, you can choose to fall asleep for any duration you set. During this sleep, you do not age, eat, sleep, or breathe. Even your body seems to shut down and become as an object, granting you hardness 5 as your body partly petrifies itself. You are helpless, but you may wake up as a standard action at any point.

At your choosing, you can appear to be dead. Make a Disguise check with a +20 bonus when you choose to play dead.

Restful[edit]

Whenever you are resting or asleep for at least 1 hour, you recover hp and ability damage as if you slept for a full 8 hours (up to 24 times over 24 hours). You do not recover daily abilities or spells, nor recover ability burn, any faster than normal.

Yawn of Sleep[edit]

You can use sleep as a supernatural ability once every five rounds. Unlike the spell, the HD cap is equal to your binder level.

Against creatures which are immune to mind affecting effects or do not sleep, the save instead becomes against being semiconscious for 1 round.
