The cleric paled as he realized they lost their rogue some time ago. The being stabbing him in the back now was not his ally at all.

Just as kytons are ostensibly devils, but actually hail from the Plane of Shadows, that darkened realm of twisted reflections produces a demonic spawn as well. Known as capgras demons or fregolis, these humanoid shades barely exist. They retain their distorted forms through force of will, but seek to steal the form of others in order to have a more stable existence with which to perform their acts of betrayal and malice.

In their natural form, they take the appearance of humanoid shadows made from blackest pitch and rippling with dark red oil-slick shine in the light. Their face is composed of two... or more... glowing pale yellow flames for eyes, which are not always in the correct place and are constantly vibrating.

They steal the forms of others and take on their appearance, making nearly picture-perfect copies. However, those that can see past the ruse can usually see a warped shadowy aura about them or the dull yellow glow behind their eyes.

Capgras demons speak Abyssal and Common. They stand at roughly 6 ft tall and weigh 180 lbs.

Combat[edit]

A capgras demon only has two reasons to be in combat in its natural form; striking a foe in an ambush in order to afflict shadowfade sickness, or fleeing because it has been found out. In any other fight, it is taking the form and abilities of another creature, and thus using their abilities and tactics as needed. It steals the form of others and usually uses subtle means of sowing chaos and disconnect within its "allies" before betraying them when needed most.

Daunt Vulnerability (Ex): A capgras demon entirely relies on force of will to exist. If the capgras demon recieves daunt levels equal or greater than its HD, or it takes enough Charisma damage to bring it to 0, it perishes and evaporates instead of the usual effects.

Dreamborn Traits (Ex): Introduced in the book Hyperconciousness, Dreamborn creatures are spawned from, and made of "dreamstuff". They appear slightly hazy and out of focus, and so all melee and ranged attacks against them suffer a 20% miss chance, as they are not entirely real. This miss chance is not the same as concealment and does not prevent the use of sneak attacks or other precision strikes. The subtype also determines if it is vulnerable to certain spells and effects which deal with dream-based creatures.

Duplication (Su): Any creature within one size category which the capgras demon has afflicted shadowfade sickness upon is a valid target for duplication. As a full-round action, they transform into the target, taking on all of their appearance, abilities, stats, class features, skills, languages, and feats, but retain their chaotic evil alignment, mindset, type and subtype, and the duplication ability. They lose everything else. They treat the hp of the duplicated creature as temporary hit points, for if all of their temporary hit points are depleted, they are forced back into their capgras demon form, and they are unable to heal these false forms they adopt. As a result, a capgras demon is always looking to replace its current body with new ones in order to keep fresh. Duplicating a creature ends the progression of shadowfade sickness on its victim.

This duplication ability allows them to mimic creatures well above their capabilities, and their CR changes appropriately. However, anyone who interacts directly with these mimicked forms gains a Will save, DC 21. On a successful save, they realize the ruse, and all damage from the capgras demon is reduced to 20% effectiveness, or only has a 20% chance of working (for non-hp effects) as if they were a [Shadow] spell effect. Creatures can gain a new save whenever introduced to new information that their opponent is a falsehood.

Items and limited resources are duplicated at the time duplication is enabled, but prove to be transparent illusions to any creatures other than the capgras demon itself and vanish 1 round after being dropped. Some items, such as artifacts, unique powerful creatures, or creatures with the copyright form feat, cannot be copied. A capgras demon can drop a form as a move action, but must afflict shadowfade sickness again to duplicate the creature anew.

Obscurity (Ex): The capgras demon is under a constant nondetection effect.

See in Darkness (Ex): The capgras demon can see perfectly in any darkness, even that created by a deeper darkness spell.

Shadow Movement (Ex): The capgras demon can use an extraordinary dimension door at will as a move action, but only within shadowy illumination or darker.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): At will-ghost sound (DC 13), ventriloquism (DC 14); 1/day-deeper darkness, expeditious retreat. The save DCs are Charisma based.

Unrealization (Su): The capgras demon spreads its unreal nature to others as it replaces them. Targets immediately come down with shadowfade sickness and become valid targets for duplication, DC 19 Fortitude save to negate. The save DC is Constitution-based. The DC for shadowfade sickness increases by +2 in shadowy illumination, and +4 in total darkness. The DC decreases by −2 in bright light such as daylight, or −4 in blindingly bright light.

Vulnerability to Light (Ex): Capgras demons take an additional 50% damage from any light-based damage source, and are constantly staggered in natural daylight.

Skills: A capgras demon has a +8 racial bonus on bluff and disguise checks, and hide checks made within shadowy illumination or darker.
